Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH), Chairman of the Judiciary Committee and member of the Oversight and Reform Committee, called for legislation to be introduced to hold abusive federal agencies like the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Justice accountable and prevent such abuses of citizen’s rights from reoccurring. Mr. Jordan mentioned his interest in this yesterday during an interview with Just The News.
In this interview, the Ohio Republican urged Congress to “use the appropriations process” and “[t]o use the power of the purse and say, ‘Look, no money can be used to target parents. No money can be used to target pro-lifers and Catholics.'” His remarks here refer to the scandals over how a leaked FBI memo linked “racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists” with “radical-traditionalist Catholic ideology” and how the Department of Justice tried to use federal law enforcement and counterterrorism resources to silence disgruntled parents who went to school board meetings.
Mr. Jordan proceeded to list out the steps that would need to be done. He said “[s]tep one: do the investigation and get the facts on the table. Get the truth out there for the American people- all the truth and all the facts. Step two: propose and try to pass legislation which will help remedy the situation.”
While Mr. Jordan did not list any concrete proposals, some Republicans have. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) recently proposed a reform that would use Congressional power to defund an abusive agency. In a speech to the House, Mr. Gaetz remarked “I intend to utilize the new rules secured in the House of Representatives to offer amendments to the Appropriations Act to zero out the salaries of ATF [Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and Explosives] bureaucrats for breaking the law and abusing the liberties of our fellow American.”

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has lauded that the House pass a bill to “strip funding for 87,000 new IRS [Internal Revenue Service] agents.”

The stated rationale for this bill by a press release from the House Ways and Means Committee was that Biden would be “unleashing 87,000 new IRS agents to go after families and small businesses and their unprecedented increase in IRS audits. The “Family and Small Business Taxpayer Protection” Act rescinds all new IRS funding for squeezing middle-class families and small businesses while enhancing the services Americans expect to receive from their government. The IRS should be focused on providing quality service to taxpayers, not targeting them.”
The same press release notes the history of the weaponization of the IRS in terms of its scandalously targeting the Tea Party and conservative organizations. Nevertheless, as Daniel Taylor of 1819 News noted “[t]his victory for Republicans in the House will likely become symbolic as the bill has little chance of making it through a Democrat-controlled U.S. Senate or passing President Joe Biden’s Desk.”
One thing is certain and that is more action as well as wise legislation is needed to combat the abuse of power by government agencies.
