An extensive report from the AZ Capitol Oversight Organization has detailed allegations that Arizona's Democrat Governor Katie Hobbs, supported by internal emails uncovered by the group, show that Hobbs in her capacity as Secretary of State during her own 2022 gubernatorial race launched an unconstitutional campaign of censorship against her political opponents.
According to the report the targets of Hobbs' censorship over the course of a year included a state legislator who was tasked with the oversight of her department. The emails reveal that through multiple takedown requests sent to Twitter, now known as X App, from Hobbs' office were not related to "public safety, governance, or election administration," but instead seemed to suppress criticism of Hobbs and attacks on her from a political standpoint.
When an August 2017 post to Twitter from Hobbs resurfaced in the aftermath of the contentious 2020 presidential election begging the question of whether the hyper-partisan Hobbs could be trusted to fairly administer the election, Hobbs reacted by personally calling for Twitter to take action against her detractors.
In an email to Twitter support from her official email address Hobbs complained that "The alt-right got a hold of a 3-year-old tweet on my account and have been sending harassing, abusive, and threatening tweets and direct messages for the last 2 days."
The same month, state Senator-elect Kelly Townsend found herself in Hobbs' censorious crosshairs after she criticized Hobbs. Given that Townsend chaired the House Elections Committee throughout 2020 and was tasked with overseeing Hobbs' office, becoming a vocal advocate for increased transparency and introducing several bills to reform Arizona's elections that Hobbs opposed.
As the report details, "On November 12, 2020, the state senator-elect criticized Hobbs on Facebook for having improperly 'denied' a request from the legislature and for using rhetoric that had 'eroded any hope that the Secretary of State could approach Arizona’s elections in a non-partisan, non-biased manner.'"
Within an hour, Hobbs' office reached out to Facebook and secretly reported Townsend's critical post only for the social network to rebuff their attempt at censorship stating, "Our team has reviewed the content you reported and it is not against our Community Guidelines.”
The report details several more incidents in addition to these that all demonstrate Hobbs utilized not only her position and email account but even members of her salaried staff at the taxpayers' expense in her efforts to hinder the constitutionally protected free speech of her political opponents. Coupled with her refusal to recuse herself from the 2022 election in her administrative capacity, these revelations should more than justify her impeachment or removal through recall.
