Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (D) took clear shots at competitor Joe Biden and his administration, saying, “There has never been a time in human history when the people who were censoring free speech… were the good guys.”
On Tuesday, a judge made a ruling barring certain members and departments of the Biden administration from contacting social media firms to censor information, per the DC Enquirer. Previously, numerous departments contacted social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter during the COVID-19 pandemic to censor anti-vaccine information to quell resistance to the vaccine.
RFK himself was one of those people, having his Instagram account suspended in 2021 over “repeatedly sharing debunked claims about the coronavirus or vaccines,” though his account was recently reinstated, as covered by the DC Enquirer. Considering that Kennedy has been a major advocate for both free speech and changing policy around vaccination, it’s very clear how he feels about censorship on social media.
Nonetheless, the Democrat made things even more clear when he shared his opinion with comedian and podcast host Russell Brand on Thursday on 'Stay Free With Russell Brand', slamming those who actively work to suppress speech on social media. RFK found a specific problem with the government having involvement in the censorship process.
“I’m very alarmed with what the European countries are doing right now because it is completely anti-democratic, and now you’re going to have the countries censoring dissent about government policies which is not a function of democracy,” the presidential candidate said. “That is clearly a characteristic of totalitarian regimes. There has never been a time in human history when the people who were censoring free speech and books, and burning books, were good guys. They’re always the bad guys.”
Kennedy also notes that if the government were to get the power to censor topics that they don’t like, it's an inevitability that those powers were going to be abused. “There’s all these excuses to do it now because things are being blamed on this tsunami of misinformation that’s out there. The remedy for bad information is not censorship, it’s more information," he explained.
The Democratic candidate also made a big promise, saying he is going to “issue a series of executive orders and national security orders ordering government agencies and government officials, any federal government employee, to refrain from any kind of participation in any kind of censorship.”
His words come in sharp contrast to Biden, who on the same day that the interview was uploaded to YouTube, filed a court challenge to the Mississippi ruling that banned his administration from collaborating with social media companies to censor Americans' speech.
When it comes to Democratic candidates, it’s clear one is an avid protector of the First Amendment while the other is willing to do all in his power to limit it. Biden continuously fails to beat Kennedy on even a single issue, always choosing the worst option at his disposal. One would hope for better from Biden, but ultimately hope means nothing in a hopeless presidency like his.
