VICE Media Group, has announced that it is slashing its staff headcount and terminating its prime-time news program “VICE News Tonight.”
The once avante-gard publishing brainchild of Suroosh Alvi, Shane Smith, and Gavin McInnes is facing collapse as it has mutated into a leftist establishment outlet of the sort it was founded to oppose with deteriorating audience reach, profitability, and quality of content.
As reported by Deadline Thursday, a memo obtained by the publication from VMG co-CEOs Bruce Dixon and Hozefa Lokhandwala revealed the layoffs telling staffers that the downsizing, cancellation of ‘VICE News Tonight’ and corporate restructuring are being done in “response to the current market conditions and business realities facing VMG and the broader news and media industry.”
The co-CEOs added,
“To be incredibly clear, Vice News is core to Vice Media Group and fundamental to our business. We are NOT exiting the news business, but we are changing the shape of Vice News to position the whole Company for long-term opportunities and improve how we deliver important, ground-breaking journalism well into the future.”
The outlet reported that while VICE has attempted to recapitalize, former CEO Nancy Dubuc exited the company in February. This has left Dixon and Lokhandwala to guide the firm to “focus on our growing digital video business and our News documentary and series production business for VTV and distribution partners worldwide.”
RADICAL LEFT VICE MEDIA IS BEGGING FOR MONEY AS THEY SUFFER RATINGS FAILURE
Vice News Tonight, will reportedly air its last broadcast on VICE TV on May 25th and the layoffs will eliminate the roles of “dozens of staffers.”
CNN’s Oliver Darcy reported, “The cuts at Vice’s news operation will result in dozens of people losing their jobs, with the DC bureau being hit especially hard, I’m told. The audio team is being eliminated entirely. The company is also trimming budgets, including travel, to save money. ”
VICE World News South Asia Editor Sahar Habib Ghazi posted to Twitter Friday that the media firm has eliminated approximately 200 jobs globally “including my whole APAC @VICEWorldNews team.”
The VICE Union of the Writers Guild of America which forced the publisher into a union bargaining agreement in 2021 lamented the layoffs in a statement posted to Twitter blaming, “the company’s mismanagement.”
The VICE Union wrote,
“VICE Union is devastated by today’s mass layoffs affecting dozens of unit members and around 100 employees overall. These workers are suffering the consequences of years of poor decisions they played no part in.
We are working with the @WGAEast to ensure that our unit members receive all that they are owed in severance according to our contract. This is not the first time VICE has made large layoffs, and it will likely not be the last.
As with every cut VICE makes, we will celebrate our colleagues’ work while lamenting the company’s mismanagement that has resulted in them being let go.”
