On Wednesday, Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) announced that he would not be seeking reelection to the upper chamber in 2024. His announcement could spur a contested primary, however, one man entered the race long ago to challenge the sitting senator: Mayor Trent Staggs.
“Now is the time to give Utah the conservative champion they have long deserved. We need America First Warriors in the Senate, and I plan to give that to Utah," Staggs said in a statement.
"My message will not change. Thank you for stepping aside, Senator Romney," the 49-year-old wrote on the X App. "Onward to ensure that Utah has the America First, small government champion they deserve, and I intend to be that."
Staggs, who is the mayor of Riverton, Utah, sat down with Steve Bannon on 'War Room' to discuss the departure of the former GOP presidential candidate from the Senate chamber at the end of his term in 2025.
"We've been traveling the state, Steve, for the last three, three and a half months since we announced," Staggs said. "And Utahns want a true conservative. They want someone who is bold, who is going to stand up to the establishment, not be a part of it and just give it cover constantly."
"So we knew that and I'm sure Senator Romney has seen that. He has seen the writing on the wall. He's seen what traction our candidacy has been getting. We've developed a huge coalition here across the state," the mayor explained. "Scores, scores of mayors, city council members, county commissioners so we are excited at this news that he has decided to step down and really make the way, like he said, for the next generation to step up."
As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, Mayor Staggs launched his campaign in May to take on Romney when no other conservative had the guts to do so.
In his campaign launch video, Staggs emphasized the multiple times in which Romney joined with Democrats as well as the various broken promises that Romney propagated during his initial campaign in 2018.
"Right now Washington is broken and every time we compromise, it costs us trillions," Staggs began. "We have more IRS agents than border agents and while we are paying $4 a gallon for gas, they are sending our money unchecked to Ukraine. Now we are more than $34 trillion in debt. Enough is enough."
"A few years ago Mitt Romney moved to Utah and told us what he'd fight for," Staggs said adding clips from a Romney campaign commercial where the former GOP nominee promised to end illegal immigration, establish a balanced budget, pushback on federal overreach, and confirm constitutionalist judges.
"But the only thing I've seen him fight for are the establishment, wokeness, open borders, impeaching President Trump, and putting us even deeper into debt," the mayor explained.
Staggs went on to explain that he "doesn't come from millions" and that he brings a penny-pinching mentality to governance.
The Republican Senate candidate then highlighted his record as mayor, emphasizing that he has reduced spending, kept businesses, schools, and churches open during the coronavirus pandemic, and fought big government.
"I'm not a career politician or a Massachusetts millionaire. I'm a mayor, a businessman, husband, and father who wants his children to grow up with the same opportunities that I did," Mayor Staggs concluded, adding, "I'm running for United States Senate to make sure that they do."
