Popular conservative radio show host Megyn Kelly slammed the siblings of presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (D) for attacking the Democrat over recent remarks made related to ethnicity and COVID-19 data.
Last week, RFK held a press event at a restaurant in New York City where he discussed the disparities in racial data for COVID-19, noting certain groups were more immune than others.
“COVID-19. There is an argument that it is ethnically targeted. COVID-19 attacks certain races disproportionately,” Kennedy said, per the New York Post. “COVID-19 is targeted to attack Caucasians and black people. The people who are most immune are Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese.”
Kennedy responded to the New York Post article, clarifying in a tweet what he was saying. He called the story written “mistaken” and clarified that he has “never, ever suggested that the COVID-19 virus was targeted to spare Jews.” The discussion was taken out of context and intended to be an off-the-record conversation, making it seem like a deliberate smear attempt against the Democratic candidate.
His sister, Kerry Kennedy, felt like taking advantage of the controversy surrounding her brother and tweeted out, “I STRONGLY condemn my brother's deplorable and untruthful remarks last week about Covid being engineered for ethnic targeting.”
“His statements do not represent what I believe or what Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights stands for, with our 50+ year track record of protecting rights and standing against racism and all forms of discrimination,” she said in a follow-up tweet.
It’s sad seeing someone's own family come to attack them when all that happened was a simple misunderstanding, especially when, if anything, Kennedy would be a victim of targeted misinformation in this case.
Megyn Kelly seemed to agree, tweeting on Monday, “Look at these terrible family members. No one was asking ‘how does RFKJ’s sister feel about his latest remarks?’ She just felt the need to kick @RobertKennedyJr when he was down. Nice.”
This isn’t the first time that RFK’s family has come out against him, having previously attacked the presidential candidate over his questioning of the pharmaceutical industry and more specifically vaccines. An article from 2019 in Politico written by Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Joseph P. Kennedy, and Maeve Kennedy McKean, all family members of RFK, spoke against his beliefs on vaccines and mischaracterized his fight to get better regulation of vaccines as an entirely anti-vaccine belief.
RFK has certainly taken numerous hits from his family, making the latest attack from his sister nothing new. But it’s still sad to see family members attack one another over disagreements publicly. Kerry had every ability to reach out to Robert and ask him about his comment so he could clarify his intent, but instead, she used it as a ‘look-at-me’ moment. Sad to see.
