On Monday, Megyn Kelly joined many other conservatives in slamming the United States Women's National Team (USWNT) for losing in the Women’s World Cup after becoming overly political, specifically targeting Megan Rapinoe as the leader behind the political shift of the team.
On the episode of ‘The Megyn Kelly Show’ with Clay Travis, an author on the show to promote his new book ‘American Playbook,’ the duo got onto the topic of the loss by the USWNT.
“I couldn’t care less about the loss– couldn’t care less. I hope that they took a lesson from losing that we all want our kids to learn when things go down, which is be introspective, figure out how it happened,” the conservative radio host said. “And in this case, they didn’t have their eye on the ball. They had their eye on their woke activism which has been this way for a while but Megan Rapinoe and her imprint on the team has now really made its mark and I’m thrilled she’s gone.”
Kelly then asked Travis, who is “immersed in sports for a living,” what he thought about the loss. He compared the reception that the team is currently receiving to its reception when it won the 2015 Women's World Cup against Japan, something he was there for. Travis said that the big change was in 2019 when President Trump invited them to the White House for a celebration after winning and they turned down the offer.
He then added that their showing this year was their worst performance ever and how ironic it was that Joe Biden tweeted how they had “an incredible run” and the “team is something special.”
Kelly and Travis then discussed the smiling reaction of Rapinoe after missing a penalty kick by a mile, which Kelly did “give her a pass on the smile.” The conservative personality did not give a pass to the overall team, however, slamming them for their lack of patriotism despite representing America on the global stage. Kelly lamented how even the less political team members are only “phoning it in” when standing for the national anthem with not even a single member “who looks proud to be there.” Kelly says that those people should leave because so many other young women would feel so privileged to represent a country as great as America, saying she’s “embarrassed of them.” Travis blamed this anti-American ideology on Democrat policies, saying that policies pushed by the left inevitably lead to people despising their own country. He notes how people are not proud of the country because the left works to make American history one of evil as opposed to the triumphant rise of the greatest nation ever to exist. Kelly adds that if someone doesn’t love their country as they should, they shouldn’t play for the American national team. “Go find another team. Good, get out. We don’t need you,” she said, miffed by the liberal ideologies pushed. The conservative radio host then noted statements from Carli Lloyd, a former player for the USWNT, about how the team is shifting away from success and towards politics, as previously covered by the DC Enquirer. Kelly plainly stated that they need to “Just play the damn soccer, alright. Shut the F up.” She added that “no one gives a s**t what your personal and political views are.” She and Travis then discussed the difference between them discussing politics, something that is closely tied to their profession and extremely relevant, and someone like Rapinoe discussing politics, something that has quite literally nothing to do with her work. Clay began discussing how success in women’s sports can commonly be tied to the freedoms and liberties awarded to women within a given country, something the United States has excelled at. He said that it could’ve been the story that was compelling but instead did the opposite and made them look bad. Kelly's disappointment with the USWNT is one shared by many Americans. The team was once something that anyone could easily stand behind as a patriotic citizen but has since become a divisive political agenda machine that only serves to split Americans. No national team should do anything to alienate American citizens or else they’re not truly the American team.
