On Tuesday, the entirely-Muslim city council of Hamtramck, Michigan passed a resolution to ban any political flags from being flown on any city property. -- including the Pride flag. The resolution passed with a unanimous vote in favor.
A city councilman, Mohammed Hassan, introduced the resolution himself, citing how flying political flags can go against citizens’ religious freedom, per the Detroit Free Press. Hassan noted that not just the LGBTQ flag but other flags with political intent were to be banned too, and added that the alphabet soup members and others are still welcomed into the city.
The resolution faced opposition during its debate, with many members of the rainbow flag group coming to speak against it. The dissenters to the measure attempted to argue that such a move would push LGBTQ members out of Hamtramck and that it was going backward in the way of progress.
But to paint a clear picture of the people arguing against the resolution, one protester wearing a clown nose joked how the next thing Hamtramck should do is change its slogan to the city “welcomes you if you’re straight.” After her truly brilliant comments, she turned and kissed the woman next to her.
The city council members were quick to fire back at the people arguing against the bill, with all the members speaking on how this was a bill to ensure the government doesn’t have any political bias.
"You guys are the ones making problems," not us, Hassan said of opponents at the meeting. "Please don't threaten us. ... I'm the elected official. ... I'm working for the people, what the majority of the people like."
Another city council member, Nayeem Choudhury, slammed the LGBTQ community for not respecting Muslim values.
"We want to respect the religious rights of our citizens," Choudhury said. "You guys are welcome. ... (but) why do you have to have the flag shown on government property to be represented? You're already represented. We already know who you are. ... By making this (about) bigotry ... it's making it like you want to hate us."
Even Hamtramck Mayor Amer Ghalib spoke in favor of the measure, saying that the new resolution would ensure that the city “serve[s] everybody equally with no discrimination, but without favoritism.”
"Those people who accused me of hating them, half of my boards and commissions are either LGBTQ or supporters for LGBTQ," Ghalib added. "I never fired anybody who belong to the LGBTQ."
The citizens of Hamtramck seemed more than happy at the measure being passed, highlighting how the move to plaster the Pride flag everywhere forces the agenda onto those whose religion goes against it. One citizen noted how “None of the religions support them. Allah created us man and woman, which is natural."
Christians have long been painted by LGBTQ groups as bigoted for opposing the enforcement of the Pride agenda, but it’s not just those who follow the word of Jesus that find it detestable. Many religions speak negatively of the values pushed by the far left, and the government not just condoning but celebrating these ideals while not doing so for others is a clear sign of favoritism.
Pride has, in many ways, become its own hedonistic religion but as it has no proper classification as one, it can bypass the separation of church and state. Nonetheless, the city of Hamtramck has taken the proper steps to ensure no citizen is forced to celebrate any belief that goes against their own.
