A new report from The Spectator released on Thursday morning cited various sources that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell will soon be retiring from his post as multiple Senate Republicans prepare to fill his position as Senate Minority Leader.
As reported by The Spectator, multiple sources have confirmed that Sens. John Cornyn (R-TX), John Barrasso (R-ND), and John Thune (R-SD) are all reaching out to their Republican colleagues in order to whip their votes for a leadership contest.
One source told the outlet that Sen. Cornyn has been particularly active by going out to lunch with senators who he has rarely interacted with. Cornyn has long been seen as a potential successor to McConnell given his extensive leadership experience within the party as the former chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the former Senate Whip.
Republican has been a mainstay in the Republican Party for decades and has led Senate Republicans since 2007. His recent fall, however, has complicated matters and likely brought his health to the forefront of his concern.
As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, the Republican fell in early March while out at a dinner at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel leading to the 81-year-old being hospitalized.
“Leader McConnell tripped at a dinner event Wednesday evening and has been admitted to the hospital and is being treated for a concussion. He is expected to remain in the hospital for a few days,” said McConnell’s Communication Director David Popp. “The Leader is grateful to the medical professionals for their care and to his colleagues for their warm wishes.”
On the night of the fall, a McConnell spokesperson stated that the minority leader “tripped at a local hotel during a private dinner. He has been admitted to the hospital where he is receiving treatment.”
In late March, McConnell released a statement saying that he would return to the Senate soon and is currently undergoing physical therapy.
“I want to sincerely thank everyone for all the kind wishes,” he said. “I’m happy to say I finished inpatient physical therapy earlier today and I’m glad to be home.”
“I’m going to follow the advice of my physical therapists and spend the next few days working for Kentuckians and the Republican Conference from home,” McConnell explained. “I’m in frequent touch with my Senate colleagues and my staff. I look forward to returning in person to the Senate soon.”
With the potential for McConnell to step down, the Republican Party will have to make a major decision as to who should lead the Senate in the coming years.
