On Friday, Nebraska passed major legislation that officially bans any “gender-affirming care” within the state of Nebraska, as well as an amendment added to the bill that prevents any doctor from performing an abortion on an unborn child after the 12th week.
The bill was able to overcome the filibuster by a supermajority of 33-15 in the Nebraska unicameral legislature, per the Washington Examiner. The bill called the ‘Let Then Grow Act', was introduced as a measure to prohibit any sex-changing procedures, including sex-reassignment surgeries, puberty blockers, and hormone treatments for any Nebraskans that are under the age of 19.
The bill was able to add a major amendment that would restrict abortion procedures after the 12th week of pregnancy, though it does provide notable exceptions in the cases of rape, incest, or a pregnancy that is a threat to the mother’s life.
The bill’s passing was a major win for Republicans in the state, letting them protect both children from the woke ideology as well as unborn children. The abortion restriction will begin going into effect the day after the governor signs the bill, while the ban on “gender-affirming care” will go into effect on October 1st.
Governor Jim Pillen (R-NE) released a statement on his Twitter reading, “All children deserve a chance to grow and live happy, fruitful lives. This includes pre-born boys and girls, and it includes children struggling with their gender identity. These kids deserve the opportunity to grow and explore who they are and want to be, and they can do so without making irreversible decisions that should be made when they are fully grown.”

The bill did grab the ire of the left, with major dissent from Democrat politicians harping on the passage of the legislation. Nebraska Democratic Party chairwoman Jane Kleeb attempted to call the people protecting unborn children and stopping minors from mutilating their genitalia “extremists.”
“The extremists showed the entire state that they are pro-life in name only since they can’t seem to lift a finger helping kids and families, all they can do is play to the worst of culture wars meant to demean and divide,” Kleeb stated.
The bill also had several protesters at the Nebraska Capitol, with at least six protesters being arrested over their disruption to the political process, per the New York Post. The protestors briefly halted the debate after protestors took to the chamber balcony to throw insults and tampons at conservative lawmakers.
Even with the dissent, the bill is a major win for Republicans and others who wish to protect children in the midwestern state. Even with the thin margin the bill passed by, it still shows a clear want to protect children, both born and unborn, within the state.
