The mayor discussed the half-baked plan to move migrants into residents' private quarters. The idea is to compensate the residents with the money set aside by the government for housing the migrants. His plan would “put it back into pockets of everyday New Yorkers,” which sounds nice until it’s considered they paid the money to house the migrants in the first place.
“There are residents who are suffering right now because of economic challenges. They have spare rooms. They have locales,” the Big Apple official said in an attempt to justify his outrageous plan.
Eric Adams suggests housing illegal migrants in private residences in New York:

“It is my vision to take the next step to this faith-based locales and then move to a private residence... They have spare rooms." pic.twitter.com/zzEczmD2U3
“It’s cheaper and it’s a good investment for us to go to a family and assist them instead of placing people in large congregate settings or in these emergency hotels,” he added. “And then if you are a family member where you are bilingual, you are going to be able to help the bilingual person that’s coming here.”
The struggling politician never explained how the actual plan with the private residences would work nor discussed how much New Yorkers would be receiving in compensation for housing the illegals. He also never stated whether he intended to house any illegal migrants within his private residence.
The plan also has an uphill battle as the city currently has a rule requiring a guest to be living within a residence for 30 days before they officially are considered a tenant. For the mayor's ridiculous plan to come to fruition, the city of New York would first need to overcome that obstacle.
“We’re trying to navigate all the rules of how to get it done,” Adams added when pressed for further details. “There are many layers to how someone can use their space. We want to make sure that we follow all the rules and those rules that need to be changed within my power, we will push to do so. If there’s rules that need to be changed on the state level, we’re going to reach out to our state colleagues to do so.”
Adams also noted in his speech that they would be housing adult male migrants in 50 places of worship throughout the entirety of New York City. It seems that even these new locales aren’t enough to quell the astronomical number of illegals that are being brought in by the city.
The plan to house the migrants within places of worship is looking to compensate them with $125 for each asylee that is housed every night, a much cheaper alternative to the $380 New York City is currently paying hotels to keep the illegals. Certain shelters will also be holding families with children and will be compensated per individual.
Residents of New York City are not all too thrilled with the plan being pushed forward by Adams, with residents referring to the idea as “nuts” and ridiculous when the average New York City citizen is struggling to afford their rent.
“It would be absolute bedlam,” a New York City resident named Zainab Jah said to the New York Post. Her partner, Tim Naylor, slammed the plan for allowing migrants a “free ride” while so many New Yorkers “cannot afford a decent place of their own.”
“Even if it was worth it to homeowners, the city shouldn’t be spending our money on that kind of crap. You have enough New Yorkers who can barely afford to live,” Naylor added.
The plan overall seems extremely predatory to those who are economically struggling within the city. The New York economy still hasn’t returned to where it was before COVID-19 leaving many families in desperate need of extra income to get by.
Rather than reducing the absurd taxes that the city has imposed on the residents, Adams is using the economic issues of the city to force residents to house the illegals or continue struggling to get by. He claims that he is looking to put money back into residents' pockets but he is also using that ‘giving’ spirit to force an illegal immigrant into their home.
