There's 'A Vacuum Of Leadership': NYC Mayor Overwhelmed By Migrants Sent From Border, Forces Smaller Cities To Bear The Unjust Burden

New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) is sending migrants that have overwhelmed the Big Apple to a hotel in the suburbs of Rockland County, New York. This decision has upset the community, with a top country official saying that the community is “not equipped to handle” the upcoming predicament.

This decision comes after Governor Greg Abbott (R-TX) sent over 57,000 migrants to the sanctuary city over the past year, per Fox News. Adams is wanting to relocate the migrants to areas around the major city as an attempt to offset the massive costs of the migrants, which are claimed to be climbing to $4 billion through the 2024 fiscal year.

Adams announced the plan on Friday, where temporary housing would be given at two hotels in Orange Lake and Orangeburg for up to 300 single-adult men that were seeking asylum.

Teresa Kenny came out against the move as a county supervisor for the area. In a Facebook post, Kenny wrote: “NYC Eric Adams called me earlier today to notify me of plans to house migrants at a hotel in Orangetown, which I later learned was the Armoni Inn located in Orangeburg.” She further added, “I agree that this calls for a Federal, not local solution… to send these people to a location that is not equipped to meet their needs, is a betrayal of that often-expressed desire by NYC to be a sanctuary for them.” Another official from the area, Representative Mike Lawler (R-NY), spoke against the decision as well. “Mayor Eric Adams must not send migrants to Rockland County as part of his plan to alleviate the strain New York City is under. Rockland County is not a sanctuary county, unlike New York City and its boroughs, and should not bear the cost associated with the Biden administration’s abject failure on border security and immigration policy.”

According to Lawler, the county is already facing a notable strain “on food banks, shelters, and our non-profits,” with this new influx of migrants in the county having the potential to “send them under.”

The decision by Adams is said to be to free the hotels up in New York City to attempt to accommodate the hundreds of asylum seekers that continue to pour into the city, as well as the expected increase in migrants following the lifting of Title 42.

Adams has pushed for the crisis to be solved with state and federal aid and that New York City alone cannot handle the burden. Adams said in a statement “Despite calling on the federal government for a national decompression strategy since last year, and for a decompression strategy across the state, New York City has been left without the necessary support to manage this crisis. With a vacuum of leadership, we are now being forced to undertake our own decompression strategy.”

It seems New York City is coming to realize you cannot have your cake and eat it too. The metropolis pushed hard to be a sanctuary city, and now they’re beginning to understand what the border crisis is really like, and the effects that having tens of thousands of migrants pouring in causes.

It’s entirely unjust for Adams to force the burden he brought on the city upon other counties in New York State. Ultimately, until Biden does something about the border crisis, problems like these will continue to arise nationwide.
