North Carolina Church Cancels $3.3 Million In Medical Debt For Thousands Of Families To Demonstrate ‘What God Does For Us’

The Trinity Moravian Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina showed the power of God’s love when they purchased over $3.3 million in outstanding medical debt from thousands of families across three North Carolina counties.

The church held a debt-burning ceremony earlier this month during their 11 a.m. service to celebrate the erasure of the millions of dollars after many individuals fall into debt or bankruptcy due to hospital stays.

“It’s a perfect real-world parable for what God does for us,” Reverend John Jackman told the Winston-Salem Journal. “A stay in the hospital can send a family into poverty or bankruptcy.”

“When poor families cannot afford to pay their medical debts, after initial collection attempts, the debts are often sold off to third party debt collectors for a penny on the dollar or less in a practice called factoring,” the church wrote on its Facebook. “The third-party collector then has the legal right to demand the entire amount. Some use very aggressive tactics.”

“This is where our Debt Jubilee Project, working with RIP Medical Debt, can intervene and purchase the debts – but we forgive them rather than collecting,” the post explained. “Watch out for the next Debt Jubilee campaign!”

The church led this project via its Debt Jubilee Project which raised over $15,000 since the beginning of the year in order to purchase the $3.3 million in debt.

The church worked alongside a non-profit, RIP Medical Debt, to buy medical debt that’s on sale from collection agencies.

Because of the church’s generosity, 3,355 families were sent a letter saying that their debt was forgiven

This isn’t the first time that the church’s congregation has shown their generosity, however. Last year they raised $1.2 million to purchase medical debt.

“We’re setting people free from the slavery of medical debt,” the reverend explained. “By the time we have bought and forgiven the currently available medical debt in the Triad, we’ll need to start again.”
