‘Not Illegal’: Hunter Biden’s Lawyer Says People Have Been Using Family Names To Gain Opportunities ‘For Millennia’

Hunter Biden’s lawyer Abbe Lowell defended his client by saying people have been using family names and connections to gain opportunities “for millennia” Friday morning on MSNBC.

Hunter Biden, along with facing potential tax charges after his plea deal fell through, is under scrutiny from Congress for his foreign business dealings in China, Romania and Ukraine and alleged influence peddling. His former business associate, Devon Archer, recently said during testimony to the House Oversight Committee that the value of appointing Hunter Biden to Burisma’s board was “the brand,” referring to then-Vice President Joe Biden.

“Now, if Congress wants to start saying, wait, does he get opportunities because his last name is Biden? They should look to themselves,” he said. “Senator Joe Manchin’s wife is on a commission in West Virginia where Congress had provided an enormous amount of funds. There is Congressperson Boebert who has a spouse that works in the consulting business.”

“If you start dissecting people who have the ability to use their connections and their name in order to get an opportunity, then, OK, but then what’s good for the goose, good for the gander, Congress should look at their own,” he continued. “People have been doing this for millennia. Maybe it’s not fair to us who don’t have the name, but that’s what happens. The most important point is that it’s not improper and not illegal.”

Lowell maintained that the younger Biden is a “capable, educated, experienced” person who graduated from Georgetown University and Yale Law School, not someone who is “out there having people write checks for no reason.”

“And the thing that’s different, and you just said it again, is that Hunter Biden has never been in a family business like the Trump kids, and he’s never acted as an adviser to the president in the White House, using both of those to then conduct business,” Lowell said. “That’s a fundamental difference that also ought to be remembered.”
