NY Times Poll Shows Harris’ Support Among Key Voter Bloc In ‘Dangerously Low Territory’

Vice President Kamala Harris is facing “dangerously low” support among Hispanic voters nationally, according to a New York Times poll released Sunday.

Harris receives the support of 56% of likely Hispanic voters compared to 37% who support former President Donald Trump in a head-to-head match-up, the New York Times reported. Harris’ support was six points lower than the 62% President Joe Biden received in the 2020 election from respondents to the poll who voted that year.

Harris’ share of the Hispanic vote dropped to 54% when independent candidate Cornel West, Green Party candidate Dr. Jill Stein and Libertarian candidate Chase Oliver were included as options for respondents. The poll of 902 Hispanic voters was conducted from Sept. 29 to Oct. 6.

Trump picked up substantial support among Hispanic voters in polling due to issues like immigration and the economy before President Joe Biden announced he would not seek reelection on July 21. Harris is regaining some support from Hispanic voters since replacing Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket, but she still falls short of Biden’s level of support among Hispanic voters during the 2020 campaign.

Trump has also gained support among black voters, receiving 15% support compared to just 9% in 2020, in the New York Times poll, further complicating Harris’ efforts to win the presidency. The former president led Harris by three points among black voters who were considered “leaners” in that poll.

Trump, who garnered 12% support from black voters in 2020 according to a CNN exit poll, exceeded that level of support in some general election polls, including August polls by CBS, which showed the former president getting 17% of black voters, and Fox News, which indicated  26% of black voters backed the former president. A CNN poll released in late September showed Harris leading Trump by 55% among black voters under the age of 60, compared to a 71% margin for President Joe Biden in 2020.
