'Our Country Is Missing A Lot Of Religion': President Trump Reflects On The Importance Of Christianity In American Life During Interview

On Tuesday, popular podcaster Lex Fridman released his interview with President Donald Trump. During the discussion, the 45th president emphasized the importance of Christianity and religion in American life and stated that he wished for the country to become more religious in the future.

In the closing minutes of their discussion, Fridman asked Trump about his morality and death. "One of the tragic things about life is that it ends. How often do you think about your death? Are you afraid of it?"

In response to the question, Trump explained that he had a successful friend in his mid-80s who asked him the same question. Trump explained that he turned the question around on his elderly friend, and the man stated that he thinks about it every minute of every day. "A week later, he called me to tell me something, and he starts off the conversation going 'tick-tok, tick-tok.' This is a dark person, in a sense. It is what it is."

After sharing the story, Trump then turned to the importance of religion and how it has shaped the country. "If you're religious, you have, I think, a better feeling for it. You're supposed to go to Heaven, ideally not Hell. You're supposed to go to Heaven if you're good. I think our country is missing a lot of religion," he said. "I think it really was a much better place with religion. It was almost a guide. To a certain extent, it was a guide. You want to be good to people. Without religion, there are no real guard rails. I would love to see us get back to more religion in this country."

While President Trump has been less open about his faith than other Republican politicians, he recently explained to Dr. Phil that he believed that God saved him from the assassin's bullet in Butler, Pennsylvania, earlier this year. "There had to be some great power because you just can't say millions to one. I used to say a million to one. It's much more than that," Trump said, adding that he had to turn right at the right moment to avoid being hit. "It's for about an eight of a second. Out of all the time that we have been on this planet, it is one-eighth of a second. So I shouldn't be with you."

"Is there a purpose? Is there a reason why you think you were spared?" Dr. Phil asked.

"The only reason I can think of is that God loves our country, and he thinks we are going to bring our country back. He wants to bring it back. It's so bad right now what's happening. When you look at crime, the horrible things happening inside our country. It can be solved. It can be solved very quickly. It has to be God. How can you say it's luck when it's 20 million to one? It's just not possible that I was in that position. It's the only position where that bullet would have missed."
