On Sunday, as President Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr. took to his vacation home at Rehoboth, Delaware, the resort town of Lahaina, Hawaii on the island of Maui was recovering from a catastrophic wildfire that, as of this report, has killed more than 90 people with hundreds still missing.
Although the firestorm that swept the historic town once known as the 'jewel of the Hawaiian Kingdom,' is difficult to grapple with on its sheer scale, a president is expected to give words of strength and reassurance to the American people. The best Biden could muster was "No comment" when approached by reporters who audibly gasped in shock.
As Trending Politics' Collin Rugg observed: though Biden has sent tens of billions of taxpayer dollars to Ukraine, he couldn't seem to find a few seconds in his weekend getaway schedule to address the American people after thousands have been displaced from their homes, 2,200 structures have been destroyed, 86 percent of which were residential, and 96 people were confirmed dead, a number that is expected to increase.
Today News Africa's acclaimed Chief White House Correspondent commented via X, "Outraged Americans blasting President @JoeBiden after he said 'no comment' when asked about the catastrophic Maui wildfire, now the deadliest US blaze in over a century. Despite the death toll climbing to about 100, Americans were outraged that Biden remained sunbathing on a beach near his Delaware home."
Earlier in the day on Sunday, during a bike ride, Biden gave another seemingly antiseptic answer when asked about the then-already mounting death toll. "We're looking into it," he said, according to The New York Post.
Last week before leaving for his Delaware beach house, Biden declared a major disaster on the island of Maui and promised federal support to ensure "anyone who’s lost a loved one, or whose home has been damaged or destroyed, is going to get help immediately." But his chilling responses to the press on Sunday wiped away any possible support for this action and triggered a massive backlash against him, hearkening back to the dramatic Biden administration non-response to the East Palestine, Ohio train derailment in early 2023.
Former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury and host of her titular podcast Monica Crowley posted a video of Biden riding his bicycle alongside footage of the devastation, "Biden doesn’t give AF about the suffering people of Maui. Or the suffering people of East Palestine, Ohio. Or the suffering people in border towns. Or the suffering people anywhere in America."
Governor Josh Green (D-HI) of Hawaii told The Associated Press, “There’s very little left there,” as he held a map of the destroyed town labeled, “Buildings Damaged in Maui Wildfires Lahaina Area.” The updated tally has over 2,700 buildings destroyed and “an estimated value of $5.6 billion has gone away."
Green told reporters, "I will tell you this, as a physician, it is a harrowing sight in Maui." He added, “When those providers, the police and this division, do come across scenes in houses or businesses it is very difficult for them because they know, ultimately, they will be sharing with our people that there have been more fatalities. I do expect the numbers to rise.”
With only three percent of the area searched by cadaver dogs on Saturday, the wildfire already was deemed to be the deadliest to strike the U.S. in over a century.
