Petition To Restore 'Redskins' Name To Washington Commanders Surpasses 100,000 Signatures

A petition started by a Native American advocacy group to change the Washington Commanders' name back to the Washington Redskins passed the major point of having over 100,000 signatures, giving extra steam to a movement many want to simply dismiss.

As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, the Native American Guardians Association (NAGA) started the petition, saying that the name change fought against the “rich history” that both the football team and Native Americans have had. In a long post alongside the petition, it defended the name, saying that it was “never intended as derogatory or offensive” but instead “carries deep cultural, historical, and emotional significance.”

“We acknowledge the concerns surrounding cultural sensitivity and the need to foster inclusivity. However, we firmly believe that there are alternative ways to honor and respect Native American heritage without erasing it,” the petition reads. “By reclaiming the Redskins name, we have the opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue, educational initiatives, and collaborations with Native American communities. Together, we can promote cultural appreciation, address misconceptions, and work towards a more inclusive society.”

The advocacy group took to X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday to share the news, informing followers that they have managed to pass the massive 100,000 signature milestone. Steam seems to be picking up for the petition as only two days prior the petition passed the 90,000 milestone, meaning that in only two days it received over 10,000 signatures.

On Wednesday, they also shared another tweet with a special milestone of 106,700 signatures, showing that they have once again managed to get over 5,000 signatures in a single day. The specific milestone was a shoutout to a radio show, 106.7 The Fan, that shared the petition and supported it.

Cancel culture has taken major hits, with the tide turning following situations like Jason Aldean’s ‘Try That in a Small Town’ getting major support despite the backlash. With such major changes in woke liberalism’s hold on society, it seems that the time has come to revisit past ridiculous cases of cancel culture and restore the sanity that was once in America.
