Pope Francis, in a departure from what is typically left-leaning, ‘progressive’ if not altogether socialist talking points, openly criticized the radical gender ideology that has been embraced by the identitarian left in recent years. The Argentine pontiff called the set of beliefs “one of the most dangerous ideological colonizations,” in global culture today.
Speaking with interviews from Argentine publication La Nación, translated by the Catholic News Agency the Pope said,
“Gender ideology, today, is one of the most dangerous ideological colonizations. Why is it dangerous? Because it blurs differences and the value of men and women. All humanity is the tension of differences. It is to grow through the tension of differences. The question of gender is diluting the differences and making the world the same, all dull, all alike, and that is contrary to the human vocation.”
As The New York Post noted, while the pope’s many treatises on so-called ‘Social Justice’ reveal a significant leftward lean in his politics, a fact much lamented by many conservative Catholics, his views on sexuality and celibacy have remained “consistently orthodox.”

He added that the growing cultural push for gender subjectivity can be attributed to well-intentioned people who, “do not distinguish what is respect for sexual diversity or diverse sexual preferences from what is already an anthropology of gender, which is extremely dangerous because it eliminates differences, and that erases humanity, the richness of humanity, both personal, cultural, and social, the diversities and the tensions between differences.”
This view has been expressed by the pope, now celebrating ten years on the throne of St. Peter, for years. As early as 2017, Catholic-Link presented a video of his teachings on the subject of accepting one’s own body. He said then, “the removal of [sexual] difference, in fact, is the problem, not the solution.”

Prior still according to CNA, in a 2016 conversation with Polish bishops, the pontiff said,
“Today children — children — are taught in school that everyone can choose his or her sex. Why are they teaching this? Because the books are provided by the people and institutions that give you money. These forms of ideological colonization are also supported by influential countries. And this is terrible!”
While the pope has stated he has no intention to write on the subject, for example with a papal bull or order, he speaks about it “because some people are a bit naive and believe that it is the way to progress.”
In the interview reflecting on his first ten years as pope, Francis did emphasize the legacy as his “pastoral line of forgiveness and understanding of the people, to make room in the Church for everyone,” and emphasized the difference between sexual orientation versus gender ideology. He has previously described homosexuality as indeed being a sin, but has counseled against it being criminal. He said, “between what pastoral care is for people who have a different sexual orientation and what gender ideology is.”
He added, “They are two different things.”
