Beginning on Ash Wednesday and continuing into the week, the now famous Catholic prayer app “Hallow” has surged in the ratings on the Apple App Store leading to it beating out major social media companies like YouTube, TikTok, and Spotify multiple days in a row.
The app, which was launched by Alex Jones, Alessandro DiSanto, and Erich Kerekes in 2018, has made major strides in the past year with over 100 million prayers completed in 2022 alone, according to The Daily Wire.
According to the app’s description, “Hallow is a Catholic prayer app that offers audio-guided meditation sessions to help us grow in our faith & spiritual lives and find peace in God. Explore over 6,000 different sessions on contemplative prayer, meditation, Catholic Bible readings, music, and more.”
“In today’s world, we’re stressed, anxious, distracted, & can’t sleep. At the same time, we’re searching for deeper meaning, purpose, & relationships,” the description continues. “We believe these two challenges can be addressed with the same solution: peace in Jesus. In the end, after all, a halo in heaven is the goal.”
The app’s success in recent days stems from the launch of its Lent Pray40 Challenge which invites users to “join the Pray40 Lent Challenge, offered in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Polish. You’ll learn to imitate Christ in your daily life alongside hundreds of thousands of Christians worldwide in prayer this Lent. Choose to walk alongside Christ this Lent.”
“Meditate on the Imitation of Christ, spending forty days alongside Jesus following His Way,” Hallow’s site reads about the challenge. “Develop greater discipline through fasting. Learn to place your trust in His mercy and love for you. Grow in humility through silent and devotional prayer. Reflect on Scripture, the Corporal Works of Mercy, and the Stations of the Cross.”
In response to the challenge, the Apple App Store was flooded with downloads. On Ash Wednesday, the company reached number three on the charts and as of this report, the app still sits fourth in most downloaded apps as of Friday.
“God is doing something pretty incredible,” Hallow founder and CEO Alex Jones told The Daily Wire. “We never thought in a million years that we might have this many people from all around the world gathered together in prayer.”
“To be top 5 in the App Store is truly unbelievable,” Jones added. “Praise be to God!”
Praise God indeed. With big names behind the Pray40 Challenge launch like Mark Wahlberg, it is no wonder why the app has had such massive success in recent days.
