On Monday, 45th President Trump demanded action from Republican House leadership to help safeguard the upcoming presidential election just 42 days away. The Republican presidential candidate warned that Democrats could use the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) to allegedly get "millions of votes" from Americans living overseas.
"The Democrats are talking about how they're working so hard to get millions of votes from Americans living overseas. Actually, they are getting ready to CHEAT!" Trump wrote on Truth Social. "They are going to use UOCAVA to get ballots, a program that emails ballots overseas without any citizenship check or verification of identity, whatsoever. (Foreign interference?) Remember they say, we have the "most secure elections in history," and anyone can get a ballot emailed to them! They want to dilute the TRUE vote of our beautiful military and their families, who Comrade Kamala has totally disrespected and abandoned. Republicans must act to stop them from stealing our military votes. WATCH! Remember, IF YOU VOTE ILLEGALLY, YOU'RE GOING TO JAIL."
President Trump's statement, which was reposted by Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), spotlights UOCAVA, which allows American military personnel, US Merchant Marines, and US Citizens abroad to vote in federal elections. The demand for congressional action comes after House Republicans failed to pass a six-month continuing resolution (CR) with the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which was attached after over a dozen GOP lawmakers stood against the spending package on fiscal responsibility grounds.
The SAVE Act, which requires proof of citizenship for those registering to vote, was passed through the House earlier this year, but the Democrat-controlled Senate refused to take up the legislation. Attaching the bill to the CR was a last-ditch effort to pass the legislation, but Speaker Johnson's failure to get it through the lower chamber doomed any hope that it would be put into place before Election Day. In its place, Speaker Johnson has put forward a three-month CR that will fund the government until December, a move that could allow Democrats to handicap a second Trump administration.
While Republicans failed to pass the SAVE Act through Congress, Trump's demand to tackle potential election security concerns for Americans voting overseas could be another opportunity for Speaker Johnson to further safeguard America's elections by restoring millions of Americans' faith in the electoral process.
