According to The Post Millennial, the rapid slide downhill for Jean-Pierre began when a reporter asked if given: the President invited Hunter to the State Dinner held in honor of Indian President Narendra Modi, would he have invited anyone who wasn't his son, but was under a plea deal with Federal prosecutors to attend. Jean-Pierre replied, "I’m just not gonna get into family discussion, personal family discussion."
"That’s his son. It’s a — He’s a family member. It’s not uncommon for family members to attend events at the White House. We could look at past presidents, I’m sure you have. So that is not uncommon. As it relates to anything related to Hunter, I’m just not going to respond to it from here."
Perhaps smelling proverbial blood in the water, the Hunter tangent was open and several reporters went for it.
A second reporter followed up, as reported by the outlet, after alluding to another non-response from Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council John Kirby had responded to the question previously by saying "It’s not an unreasonable question to ask, for the President of the United States to be involved, as this message seems to suggest, in some sort of coercive conversation for business dealings by his son."

The Washington Examiner reported that six different reporters hammered the Biden administration in turn Friday afternoon, pressing for a response to the incriminating WhatsApp message Hunter Biden sent a Chinese official in 2017 per an IRS whistleblower, as previously reported by DC Enquirer.
The outlet noted that James Rosen of Newsmax asked Kirby, "Does this not undermine the president’s claim during the 2020 campaign and the reaffirmations of that claim by his two press secretaries since then, that he never once discussed his son’s overseas business dealings with him?"
Kirby answered, "No." flatly adding, "I'm not going to comment further on this." Through a terse exchange, he added, "Let me save you some breath. If you’re going to ask about this, I am not address — I am not going to address this issue from this podium."
Kirby then left the podium, being replaced by Jean-Pierre, who likewise stonewalled the press, referring every inquiry to the White House counsel, which issued a frustratingly short statement saying very little.
Even The New York Times pressed the White House for an answer with a reporter saying“It’s a reasonable question to ask.""As we have said many times before, the President was not in business with his son. As we have also said many times before, the Justice Department makes decisions in its criminal investigations independently, and in this case, the White House has not been involved," it told the Examiner in a statement. "As the President has said, he his son and is proud of him accepting responsibility for his actions and is proud of what he is doing to rebuild his life."
"The president of the United States is involved, as this message seems to suggest, in some sort of a coercive conversation for business dealings by his son. Is that something that, if he wasn’t, then maybe you should tell us?"
Jean-Pierre added again, "my colleague at the White House counsel has answered this question already." She deflected, "I just don't have anything to share outside of what my colleagues have shared." Every subsequent attempt received the same response with minor variances.
As IBC Group CEO and cryptocurrency influencer Mario Nawfal tweeted, "She refused to provide a new statement, saying “nothing has changed,” and did not confirm or deny if the President was involved. Things are heating up..."
