'Public Offices Are Not For Sale': McCarthy Outlines Why He Needs To Hold President Biden Accountable With Impeachment Inquiry

On Tuesday, Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) formally announced the opening of an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. Following the announcement, McCarthy sent a letter to his congressional colleagues explaining his reasoning for the major move against Biden.

"Simply put, the American people deserve to know that public offices are not for sale and that the federal government is not being used to cover up the actions of a politically-connected family," McCarthy wrote.

The impeachment inquiry will be led by Chairmans James Comer (R-KY) leading Oversight, Jim Jordan (R-OH) leading Judiciary, and Jason Smith (R-MO) leading Ways and Means.

McCarthy laid out the following five reasons justifying the launching of an impeachment inquiry:

  • Biden repeatedly lied to the American public about his involvement with his son's foreign business dealings, particularly the denial that his son got money from communist China.
  •  "Eyewitness testimony revealed that the President joined multiple phone calls and had various interactions with his son's business partners" in order to enrich his family and Hunter Biden's business associates.
  • The Biden family collected $20 million in payments that made their way to the family through shell companies. From those payments, over 150 of those banking transactions were flagged as suspicious by U.S. banks.
  • A trusted FBI informant, as outlined in FD-1023, has alleged that then-Vice President Biden took bribes to the amount of $10 million from Burisma Holdings, which Hunter was a sitting board member, in exchange for Biden to use withhold a $1 billion loan guarantee to force the Ukrainian government to fire Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin, who was investigating Burisma for corruption.
  • Lastly, President Biden, since taking office, has repeatedly attempted to thwart House investigations and Department of Justice probes into his son Hunter Biden. "For example, in July, there was the sweetheart plea deal that President Biden's Department of Justice tried to sneak past the public. Had a federal judge not rejected the deal, it would have gone through unnoticed."

McCarthy announced the impeachment inquiry to the press on Tuesday morning, saying, "House Republicans have uncovered serious and credible allegations into President Biden's conduct. Taken together, these allegations paint a picture of a culture of corruption."

"Now here's what we know so far. Through our investigations we have found that President Biden did lie to the American people about his own knowledge of his family's foreign business dealings," the speaker said. "Eyewitnesses have testified that the president joined on multiple phone calls and had multiple interactions, dinners that resulted in cars and millions of dollars into his son and his son's business partners."

"We know that bank records show that nearly $20 million in payments were directed to the Biden family members and associates through various shell companies," the representative said. "The Treasury Department alone has over 150 transactions involving the Biden family and other business associates that were flagged as suspicious activity by U.S. banks."

"Even a trusted FBI informant has alleged a bribe to the Biden family," he added. "Biden used his official office to coordinate with Hunter Biden's business partners about Hunter's role in Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company."

"Finally, despite these serious accusations, it appears that the president's family has been offered special treatment by Biden's own administration. Treatment that they not otherwise would have received if they were not related to the president," he explained. "These are accusations of abuse of power, obstruction, and corruption and they warrant further investigation by the House of Representatives."

"That's why today, I am directing our House committee to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden," McCarthy said. "This logical next step will give our committees the full power to gather all of the facts and answers for the American public. That's exactly what we want to know, the answers. I believe the president would want to answer these questions and allegations as well."
