Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) made the massive announcement that he filed an “official criminal referral” to the Department of Justice directed at the former Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) and Chief Medical Advisor to the President Dr. Antony Fauci.
The senator specifically called attention to an email dating back to February 2020 where Fauci discussed a call with a British medical researcher named Jeremy Farrar. At the time of the email, Farrar was the director of the Wellcome Trust. According to the recount from Fauci, several “highly credible” scientists expressed concern about the "fact upon viewing the sequences of several isolates of the nCoV, there were mutations in the virus that would be most unusual to have evolved naturally in the bats and that there was a suspicion that this mutation was intentionally inserted."
"The suspicion was heightened by the fact that scientists in Wuhan University are known to have been working on gain-of-function experiments to determine the molecular mechanisms associated with bat viruses adapting to human infection, and the outbreak originated in Wuhan," Fauci continued in his email.
The leaking of this email brings up questions, as previously Fauci has adamantly denied the very statements that he made in the email. Fauci has even denied them before Congress, making it possible that he lied before Congress and thus committed a federal crime.
“This directly contradicts everything he said in the committee hearing to me, denying absolutely that they funded any gain of function, and it’s absolutely a lie. That’s why I sent an official criminal referral to the DOJ," Paul wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Saturday.
Paul looked to a paper published that credits the National Institute of Health and states that it had given a grant to them. In the paper, the author used two bat coronavirus spike genes and combined them with other biological factors to create new, unnatural viruses, showing the possibility of making lab-grown viruses like many claimed COVID-19 to be. Fauci dismissed the paper, saying that it "was judged by qualified staff up and down the chain as not being gain of function." "Let’s read from the NIH definition of ‘gain of function,'" Paul said. "This is your definition that you guys wrote. It says that ‘scientific research that increases the transmissibility among mammals is gain of function.’ They took animal viruses that only occur in animals, and they increased their transmissibility to humans. How you can say that’s not gain of function – it’s a dance, and you’re dancing around this because you’re trying to obscure responsibility for 4 million people dying around the world from a pandemic.” Clearly, there are lies told by Fauci during his time speaking before Congress and it’s only right that he is held accountable for them. No individual, regardless of status, should be able to lie before not just Congress but the American people during a time of crisis and get off scot-free.
