Raymond Kelly, who holds the record for being the longest-serving police commissioner of New York City, was interviewed by Fox News host Maria Bartiromo and gave his thoughts on the congressional hearing into violent crime in his city and on the crime problem there according to Breitbart News. The former police commissioner lamented the state of the city he loved and noted that “Alvin Bragg is a major contributor to this [crime wave].”
Kelly made that comment when he was stating how he appreciated the hearing on violent crime by the Republican-led House. He said that “I liked the fact that victims of crime can speak directly to politicians. They avoid that as much as they possibly can. But yes, Chairman Jordan (R-OH) was right on target as far as police officers being treated with such disrespect throughout the country. [Y]ou walk along the streets of New York, you can see how much the quality of life has deteriorated. And that’s why people are leaving. It’s right there. You can see it plain as day.”
Maria Bartiromo asked what was the source of the crime wave and police resignation. Kelly responded by listing a number of people. He said “Well, I attribute it to the administration, certainly, the administration of Bill de Blasio. He set the tone, so to speak. Mayor Adams has not done the things, in my opinion, that would significantly reduce crime, bring back the anti-crime units, do stop, question, and frisk in a more active way. I think he’s trying to get the subways back. But that’s another — that’s a challenge.”
He then added that “So, I think it really has to do with — certainly, Alvin Bragg is a major contributor to this, because the other district attorneys in New York City follow the lead of the Manhattan district attorney.”
Mr. Kelly was twice appointed to the post of the police commissioner of New York City under Mayor David Dinkins from 1992 to 1994 and under Mayor Michael Bloomberg from 2002 to 2013. As the New York Daily News noted “He [Kelly] presided over a historic drop in crime that has transformed New York City. And, in the process, he became the prototypical 21st-century crime fighter.”
