On Wednesday at a hearing for the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, Representative Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) blasted a far-left witness for her inability to cite even a single medical study that proved her bogus claim of transgender surgeries benefiting minors.
The Lone Star State Representative spoke with Yale School of Medicine assistant professor Meredith McNamara about a proposal to withdraw funding from hospitals that provide any gender-transitioning treatments to minors. The far-left university staff member found a problem with the idea and was at the hearing to speak against such a move.
McNamara attempted to argue against the logistics that were used to craft such a proposal, saying “it is very unscientific and flawed to pick a single study or a single statistic and discuss it in isolation. Medical experts are able to talk about all of the evidence as a whole.”
“Totally agree,” Crenshaw quickly responded. "It's good to look at systematic reviews, right? That's the gold standard of evidence when you're trying to understand whether something works or it doesn't. The British Journal of Medicine looked at 61 systematic reviews with the conclusion that, quote, ‘There is great uncertainty about the effects of puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and surgeries in young people.’ The Journal of the Endocrine Society came up with the same conclusion, even the American Academy of Pediatrics. They all cite the lack of evidence."
"If you're doing a therapy, and it's, you know, temporary, fine, whatever, maybe let's try it and see if it works," he continued. "But when you're talking about permanent physiological changes, do you not agree, just from an ethical standpoint, that you might want extremely strong evidence of the benefits? There's no systematic review that states that there's strong evidence of benefits."
Seemingly cornered, the Yale assistant professor attempted to poke holes in the sources that the Texas congressman used, referencing a “quality evidence grading system” and asking if he was aware of how it is used.
Crenshaw had none of her deflecting and noted that he did not rely on such a system but instead had him and his team read through the studies and make individual decisions on whether they were reliable sources of information.
The former Navy SEAL had no intention of letting up on the offense, asking "Which journal says something different? We should have that debate. Tell me a journal that has done systematic reviews that cites different evidence, that cites strong evidence of benefits for these therapies.”
McNamara quickly attempted to change the subject from any journal, instead beginning to talk about “the standards of care” on sex reassignment procedures. Crenshaw continued to push her for a journal that went against the claims made by him and his team, but instead, the Yale employee continued to deflect.
It would seem that leftists don’t intend to hold themselves to the same standards they wish to hold the right to. There is so much evidence against the ridiculous and disgusting idea of allowing minors to medically transition and anyone who argues against that is completely disconnected from reality.
