Republicans Call For Major Action to Shine A Light On Covid-19 Origins – ‘Let America See What the Government Knows’

Several eminent Republican lawmakers are pushing for the Biden administration to declassify documents relating to the origins of COVID-19. This push came amid the backdrop of a report in the Wall Street Journal that the Department of Energy found evidence that the virus came from a Chinese lab leak rather than originating from nature. The conclusion was, however, made with low confidence. Censorship over this issue of virus origination was commonplace during the early stages of the COVID-19 outbreak with many advocates for the lab leak story being labeled as purveyors of disinformation and baseless conspiracy theorists.

For instance, when President Trump was asked back in 2020 whether he saw any evidence that suggested the virus came from a lab and Mr. Trump remarked, “Yes, I have”, CNN said Trump was spreading an “unproven theory.” CNN went further by airing concerns that the demands coming from Trump’s White House on investigating this matter were “alarming”.

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) tweeted in response to the recent Wall Street Journal revelation that “Classified documents leaked (they should be declassified!) showing scientists at DOE believe COVID leaked from Wuhan Lab.”

The good senator from the Bluegrass State in effect was calling for declassification of materials pertaining to the COVID origin investigation.

Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) seconded Senator Paul’s proposal by tweeting, “The American people deserve the full truth about #covid origins. No more whitewash. I will again introduce legislation to make the US government’s intelligence reports on covid open to the people.”

John Kirby, an official in the Biden administration, was reported to claim that no there was still no consensus in the government over the origin of the virus. In response to this utterance by Kirby, Senator Hawley mused, “Here’s an idea: declassify the intelligence and let the American people see it themselves. Quit lying to us.”

He further tweeted that “Let America see what the government knows about #covid-no more hiding.”

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) issued similar remarks to his Republican senatorial colleagues when he tweeted, “We need Senate hearings over the Wuhan lab leak – sadly, Senate Democrats won’t hold them. Every American has a right to know – and we have a duty to get to the bottom of this!”

The Texan Republican had previously claimed that three sets of facts, in particular, compelled him to seriously consider the lab leak theory as far back “more than 2 years ago”. The first was that the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which studied coronaviruses (from the non-local bat species that this particular virus came from), was located very close to the first reported outbreaks of the disease.

Secondly, prior to the official outbreak of the disease, three researchers from the institute were hospitalized with “ailments that suggest they may have been the first people with COVID-19.” Finally, the Chinese government engaged in a cover-up operation where they destroyed samples from the Wuhan Institute of Virology and disappeared whistleblowers after the outbreak of the pandemic.

As the DC Enquirer noted, that classification in DC is overused and often used to hide material that is embarrassing but not national security related.  Surely, the public has a right to know where the virus came from.
