Republican lawmakers in both houses of Congress have a plan to overturn Biden’s executive order regarding student loan debt cancelation by using congressional authority under the Congressional Review Act to do so, according to Just The News. Biden’s executive order unilaterally proclaimed that the government would “forgive” $10,000 in federal student loan debt for those earning less than $125,000 annually or for couples making $250,000 annually. It would also cancel $20,000 for Pell Grant awardees. These debt cancellations are projected by the U.S. Congressional Budget Office to cost the taxpayer around $400 billion. Biden’s debt cancelation program has been on hold pending a Supreme Court verdict on it according to Just The News.
Senator John N. Kennedy (R-LA) in a statement in a press release declared that “President Biden’s promise to cancel student debt is a woke fairy tale: The federal government doesn’t have the power to magically make debt disappear. The president is forcing Americans who paid off their debt, worked through college, went to a trade school or chose not to go to school to foot the bill for those who haven’t paid back their personal loans.
The 71-year-old senator from the Pelican State added that “[n]ot only is this plan morally wrong, it will fan the flames of inflation and make necessities even more unaffordable for hardworking Louisianians.”

Louisiana’s other Republican senator, Bill Cassidy, remarked that “President Biden’s student loan scheme does not ‘forgive’ debt, it just transfers the burden from those who willingly took out loans to those who never went to college, or sacrificed to pay their loans off. Where is the relief for the man who skipped college but is paying off his work truck, or the woman who paid off her loans and is now struggling to afford her mortgage? This resolution prevents these Americans, whose debts look different from the favored group the Biden administration has selected, from picking up the bill for this irresponsible and unfair policy.”
Representative Bob Good (R-VA) similarly pronounced that “President Biden’s so-called student loan forgiveness programs do not make the debt go away, but merely transfer the costs from student loan borrowers onto taxpayers to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars. Congress should stop these unilateral actions, and I am proud to lead the fight in the House to hold President Biden accountable for his reckless, unfair, and unlawful student loan proposal. I hope all my colleagues will join me and support this effort”
The joint resolution simply declares that “Congress disapproves the rule submitted by the Department of Education [on Biden’s executive order]…[and that] such rule shall have no force or effect.”
As Just The News notes the joint resolution would need Biden’s signature on it, which is unlikely, or a veto-proof majority in order to take effect.
