Michael J, Morell, former deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) under President Obama, who drafted the infamous October 2020 letter signed by 50 other ex-national security officials that sought to discredit the Hunter Biden laptop expose as Russian disinformation also wrote op-eds in support of Joe Biden’s presidential campaign, according to The Washington Free Beacon. These op-eds written by the ex-spook were published by the Washington Post. One article called for the resignation of John Ratcliffe, Trump’s Director of National Intelligence, ironically accusing Mr. Ratcliffe and Trump of “using the intelligence community as a political weapon…[which is] directly contrary to the values of the intelligence community.” Evidentially this was an act of confession through projection.
Mr. Morell also tried to argue that Trump’s debt was a national security concern in another article and compared him to Aldrich Amos, a Soviet spy. This is despite the fact that Trump was underleveraged and as an article in the Associated Press put it “the notion of Trump going broke anytime soon is farfetched.” Morell also pushed the theory that Russians had infiltrated “Trump’s 2016 campaign” and that “We may never know exactly what happened” in yet another article. This is despite the fact that the ‘Russiagate’ theory has been thoroughly debunked and Morrell’s article recycled already debunked claims (even if they made their way into a Senate report).
As The Washington Free Beacon noted, Morell acted as an agent for the Biden campaign as it was he who readily admitted that he was behind the infamous 2020 national security letter knocking the true Hunter Biden laptop story as Russian disinformation. He undertook this endeavor after a conversation with Anthony Blinken, the current Secretary of State, with the aim of aiding Biden to “win the election.”
The Washington Free Beacon wrote that “The Post has penalized columnists for campaign connections more tenuous than Morell’s. In 2011, conservative columnist George Will came under scrutiny after his wife began advising Rick Perry’s presidential campaign. The Post’s ombudsman found that Will did not use his column to improperly boost his wife’s client, but said the columnist should have disclosed his wife’s work.”
The conservative outlet also interviewed various individuals for their thoughts on the matter. Tim Graham, the Media Research Center’s director of media analysis, said, “A cynic would say none of this is surprising. It’s that ‘career official’ spin that helps them present people like Morell as less partisan.”
A spokesman for the Washington Post defended his outlet and noted that the final article they published by Mr. Morell was on October 12th, 2020 which was a few days before the infamous letter episode. However, it was established that Morell was in contact with Mr. Blinken before the publication of that letter. Morell mentioned in his testimony that Blinken sent him an article in US TODAY that stated that the FBI was looking into whether the laptop was part of a Russian plot. It was then that Mr. Morrell contacted a former CIA colleague and started the letter.
It is also noteworthy that Mr. Morell was at one point considered to be a potential CIA director for Joe Biden.
