Senator Cruz Blasts The Left’s ‘Political Smear Job’ Against Conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas – ‘It’s Disgusting’

When the media outlet ProPublica picked up a story that the originalist Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas went on undisclosed luxury trips with a billionaire friend, Democrats pounced on the story by declaring it an ethics violation. However, even CNN admitted that the Democrat’s plans to probe the allegations “were unclear.” Other outlets called this probe “hypocritical” and politically selective. Former liberal Supreme Court jurist Stephen Breyer even made public comments that Thomas is “a man of integrity.”

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) called it a “political smear job” and noted that “They’re not looking at any other judges. This is a political smear job directed at Clarence Thomas, because he is an extraordinary constitutionalist.” The Texan thought that this selective attack on Thomas by Democrats was simply because an “African-American is not allowed to be a conservative.” Justice Thomas is a prominent black conservative jurist.

Thomas, during his contentious confirmation hearing back in 1991, echoed a similar sentiment as Mr. Cruz. He called the attacks on him by Democrats “a circus. It is a national disgrace. And from my standpoint, as a black American, as far as I am concerned, it is a high-tech lynching for uppity-blacks who in any way deign to think for themselves, to do for themselves, to have different ideas, and it is a message that, unless you kowtow to an old order, this is what will happen to you, you will be lynched, destroyed, caricatured by a committee of the U.S. Senate, rather than hung from a tree.”

When Will Saletan, a writer for The Bulwark, noted Senator Cruz’s statement that “Democrats hate Justice Thomas, And they save a special degree of hate for him because he’s a black man. And their view is an African American is not allowed to be a conservative” on Twitter, Senator Cruz simply noted this comment by writing “correct.”
