On Friday evening, a massive explosion took place in a West Reading, Pennsylvania chocolate factory leading to two dead and multiple injured.
The explosion took place at approximately 5 p.m. at the R.M. Palmer Company on Friday.
“It was the loudest thing I’ve ever heard in my life,” said Kristen Wisniewski, a resident who lives three blocks from the factory. “It literally felt like the ground fell out from underneath you. The whole house shook and my dogs froze, they couldn’t move, it was scary.”
Police officials said that they were able to pull one individual from the rubble with Police Chief Wayne Holben saying that the discovery “provides hope that others still may be found.”
As reported by ABC6, officials are currently using dogs and specialty equipment to attempt to find more individuals in the rubble.

Reading Hospital received ten patients in relation to the explosion. “Of those, one was transferred to Lehigh Valley Hospital, one to Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical Center, two have been admitted and are in good and fair condition, and the others have been discharged,”
With the massive explosion taking place in the town, residents are shaken and the factory itself is likely unrecoverable.
“It’s pretty leveled, unfortunately, there’s not too much to be able to salvage from it,” said Mayor Samantha Kaag, according to ABC6. “In the front, with the church and the apartments, the explosion was so big that it moved that building four feet forward.”
Governor Josh Shapiro visited the site on Saturday releasing in a statement: “Our hearts break for the families of those who didn’t come home. We are with you – and my Administration is here to provide all the resources and support West Reading needs.”
