On Saturday morning, the Super PAC Never Back Down released a new ad promoting Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) for the presidency. The ad comes as DeSantis is facing flagging poll numbers and his main rival, 45th President Donald Trump, has picked up over half of the Florida congressional delegations’ support for his nomination.
The ad focuses on DeSantis’ background of being raised in a blue-collar family, with a particular focus on steel manufacturing given DeSantis’ grandfather worked in the field.
“Steel isn’t forged overnight,” the ad began. “But after all the mining, blasting, and casting is done. It’s strong. It lasts.”
“Grandson of a steelworker, Ron DeSantis worked his way through college and law school,” the ad said about DeSantis’s attendance at Yale and Harvard Law School. “Joined the Navy as a JAG officer. Volunteered to serve in Iraq advising Seal Team One, earning a Bronze Star.”
“Held the Republican establishment accountable in Washington,” the ad stated in regard to his time in Washington from 2013 to 2018.
“As Governor, DeSantis stood up to Dr. Fauci when others stood aside,” the ad posits despite the fact that even Florida shut down in the early days of the pandemic.
“Banned CRT and go the smut out of schools,” the Super PAC emphasized in reference to the Parents Rights in Education Act that banned discussion of sexual content in schools.
“Refused to let woke Disney push us around and put media elites in their place,” the ad claimed despite the fact that Disney has continued to be a thorn in DeSantis’ side.

“Ron DeSantis never backs down because his backbone wasn’t forged overnight,” it concluded, adding, “Conservative warrior always. Ron DeSantis for President.”
While Governor DeSantis has yet to announce his candidacy for the presidency, his odds appear to be increasingly slim to win the nomination. President Trump is dominating in both national and early primary state polls by 20 to 30 points for the Republican nomination.
Making matters worse for the Florida governor is that nearly a dozen Republican congressmen from Florida have backed Trump over their governor. According to FiveThirtyEight’s endorsement tracker, President Trump dwarfs any competitor with the number of endorsements that he possesses.
According to the tracker, Trump has the endorsement of 48 representatives, nine senators, and two governors along with various other state officials. DeSantis on the other hand only has the support of three members of Congress: Reps. Laurel Lee (R-FL), Chip Roy (R-TX), and Thomas Massie (R-KY).
DeSantis is widely expected to announce his candidacy in the coming months and with recent ads promoting his record, it is likely his name will become better known to the average Republican primary voter. It is, however, looking increasingly unlikely that he will be able to secure the Republican nomination leaving many wondering if he should even run at all in 2024 and instead wait for 2028.
