Only last week, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., son of the assassinated Senator and Secretary of State Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of assassinated President John F. Kennedy, announced his candidacy for president as a Democrat intent on challenging Joe Biden in the 2024 primary. It’s no small feat that in a matter of days he’s already showing in the polls at 10 percent, according to a new survey from Morning Consult, which places him at 6 pts. ahead of returning candidate Maryanne Williamson.
What’s even more interesting is the breakdown of the poll and holding it side-by-side with RealClearPolitics averages for other more mainstream Democrats.
The share of potential Democratic primary voters who, if the 2024 Democratic presidential primary or caucus were held in their state today, would vote for:
Biden: 70%
Kennedy: 10%
Williamson: 4%
Someone Else: 8%
Don’t Know/ No Opinion: 8%

As broken down by Morning Consult, the 65+ demographic among the 827 voters who said they plan to vote in the 2024 Democratic presidential primary or caucus was an astonishing 17% showing a major deviation. Kennedy, Jr., also polls higher among women at 13% as well as voters who did not attend college.

Add to this that on RealClearPolitics, the RCP Average for every candidate other than President Joe Biden is under ten percent. While Williamson and Kennedy, Jr. are not yet factored into the RCP average, that still makes a potent early statement. As the campaign progresses and the two most recent candidates are added, the picture will become more clear.
The mainstream establishment media has been pushing against Kennedy since his official launch of Kennedy’s campaign last week, such as Jake Tapper calling him an “Anti Vaccine Quack” on CNN.
Jake Tapper: “Anti-vaccine quack RFK Jr. has filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to run for president as a Democrat… Kennedy is such a healthcare menace, in 2019, even his cousins wrote an op-ed criticizing his anti-science views on life-saving vaccines.” pic.twitter.com/8c6SmAlXNo

Kennedy is in fact competitive, and that’s something he’s latched onto in his own social media. He wrote Saturday, “Is it a sign of my campaign’s strength that the Elite of DC’s establishment media simultaneously and shamelessly published an orchestrated and baseless lie to smear me, even before I announce my presidential campaign?”

The polls in the coming weeks will show us precisely how competitive the latest generation of the Kennedy political dynasty is in a nation of bitter political polarization, with some who are perhaps looking at him with nostalgia and a hope for a return to a less hostile political reality.
