When she won her seat in Texas' 34th Congressional District back in 2022, the impact was seismic. A decades-old Democrat stronghold had fallen decisively and unexpectedly. The left naturally pounced when redistricting damaged the GOP advantage and Demcrat Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX) won the new district at the cost of his old one. But once again, Texas' America First Latina Mayra Flores is stepping into the ring, and the polls show the winds are in her favor.
By the time the dust settles, the Democrats could lose not just one, but two seats in the Texas Congressional delegation, and the Rio Grande Valley could once again be represented by an America First Republican, focused on "God, Family and Country," who rose from the cotton fields of Texas to the halls of Congress.
In an early morning tweet on Tuesday, Flores announced her Congressional comeback bid with a video highlighting the hard work of her father to make a life in America and the importance of family.
She captioned the video, "I am excited to announce that I am officially running for Congress in #TX34 We made history last year, but there’s still work to be done here in South Texas. I’m running to help restore the American Dream, secure our borders, and stand strong on our values of God, Family and Country"
According to Click2Houston, in the 2022 general congressional election, contending with redrawn district lines that now showed a hypothetical D+16, a 16-point advantage for Joe Biden if it had been so in 2020, Gonzalez only beat Flores by a slim nine percent margin.
In a statement released by the local outlet, Flores targeted President Joe Biden's policies and their impact on her district,
“We made history in South Texas last year, but there is more work to be done,” Flores said in the statement. “Joe Biden’s policies are running our country into the ground, and people in our communities are suffering."
The Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee might've missed the numbers on this one though. Spokesman Viet Shelton claimed in a statement to the outlet that voters "decisively rejected" Flores' "extreme agenda," suggesting that she's "barreling towards a repeat defeat."
Breitbart News reported days ago that internal GOP polling shows Flores and Gonzalez are tied going into the race and the National Republican Campaign Committee shared the poll with a memo stating Flores "has already proven she can win, and new polling shows she remains popular."
The memo predicted, "If Flores runs, she would begin ahead 42.4-41.7%. Among independents, her lead would grow to +19%. She wins because she is well-known (90% name ID) and popular—with 43% favorable against 29% unfavorable."
