Representative Lance Gooden (R-TX) released a statement of endorsement right after meeting with Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL), who is running a shadow campaign against Donald Trump for the Republican presidential nomination. The Texan’s endorsement, however, was not that of Ron DeSantis but the frontrunner rival of the Florida executive, Mr. Trump. Mr. Gooden mentioned his meeting with the governor during his statement on Twitter where he said “Today, after careful consideration and a positive meeting with Governor DeSantis, I have decided to endorse President @realDonaldTrump for 2024. I look forward to fighting alongside him to reclaim our country from the leftist forces trying to destroy it.”

Attached to the representative’s tweet is a formal press statement where it noted that “While Congressman Gooden has great respect for Governor DeSantis and his accomplishments in Florida, he firmly believes President Trump’s proven track record and commitment to putting America first make him the best candidate in 2024….there is no doubt in my mind that President Trump is the only leader who can save America from the leftist onslaught we are currently facing. President Trump is a tireless fighter, a champion of American jobs, a guardian of our economy, and a bulwark against the relentless invasion of our borders by illegal immigrants.”
This endorsement of Trump came on the heels of DeSantis meeting Republican congresspersons for their support for his campaign and to lock down the support of the Floridian congressional delegation. DeSantis’s informal campaign has taken a beating in the polls which show that Mr. Trump has a commanding lead over the governor for the Republican primary vote and it needed some political momentum. The attempt to arrest Trump’s momentum failed, however, as many from the Florida delegation that were rumored to be more pro-DeSantis endorsed the former president.

As Josh Kraushaar, the editor-in-chief of Jewish Insider, noted in a tweet that “No surprise that DeSantis wasn’t going to get Matt Gaetz or Anna Paulina Luna. But to lose Greg Steube, Brian Mast and Byron Donalds [all of whom endorsed Trump]– the type of FL Republicans you’d expect to be on the DeSantis bandwagon — is a leading indicator something not right with the RD outreach.”

He further added that one ought to “keep in mind that at least Steube was one of the FL Rs that was a top RD target in the gov’s outreach, per NBC News.”

Kaelan Dorr, the Chief Marketing Officer for Trump’s 2020 campaign, commented that the Texan’s endorsement of Trump after meeting with Governor DeSantis ” is like going to prom and DJT walking off with your date.”
