On Monday, the Biden White House declined an offer for President Joe Biden to testify from House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) amid the ongoing impeachment inquiry to determine if the president used his influence to enrich his family via his son Hunter Biden. White House counsel Richard Sauber explained the White House's reasoning in a letter to the chairman.
“Your insistence on peddling these false and unsupported allegations despite ample evidence to the contrary makes one thing about your investigation abundantly clear: The facts do not matter to you,” Sauber wrote, per National Review. “Accordingly, we decline your invitation for President Biden to testify.”
Chairman Comer sent his letter requesting Biden to testify last month where he requested that the president answer several questions in writing about whether the 81-year-old Democrat had previously interacted with foreign businessmen.
"The public is left with two irreconcilable narratives. The first—asserted by you—is that you did not engage in influence peddling in exchange for payments to your family," Comer wrote. "The second—asserted by witnesses and a body of evidence I will briefly review below—is that you were indeed involved in these pay-for-influence schemes and that you have been repeatedly untruthful regarding a matter relevant to national security and your own fitness to serve as President of the United States."
The Kentucky Republican also demanded answers from the president about his various claims pertaining to his involvement with businesses in China and Russia as well as his pressuring of the Ukrainian government to fire the Ukrainian prosecutor general that was investigating Burisma Holdings, the same company that Hunter Biden was a board member of. Comer also took issue with the various "loan repayments" sent to the 81-year-old president by his brother Jim Biden.
In response to Biden's refusal to testify publicly on the evidence uncovered during the inquiry, Comer demanded that Biden be transparent with the public. “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree in the Biden family. Like his son, Hunter Biden, President Biden is refusing to testify in public about the Bidens’ corrupt influence peddling," Comer said in a statement. "This comes as no surprise since President Biden continues to lie about his relationships with his son’s business partners, even denying they exist when his son said under oath during a deposition that they did. It is unfortunate President Biden is unwilling to answer questions before the American people and refuses to answer the very simple, straightforward questions we included in the invitation. Why is it so difficult for the White House to answer those questions? The American people deserve transparency from President Biden, not more lies.”
