On Wednesday evening, scores of pro-Palestine protesters descended upon the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington, D.C., leading to the Capitol complex to go into total lockdown as Capitol Police and the D.C. Metro Police attempted to contain the situation, evacuate staff, and arrest those responsible for the mayhem. The group of left-wing demonstrators demanded a ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, and their chaotic protest comes just a day after tens of thousands of pro-Israel demonstrators marched throughout the nation's capital.
At the time of the demonstration, dozens of Democrat lawmakers, including Minority Leader Hakeem Jefferies (D-NY), were inside the DNC for a campaign reception. The demonstrators, while shouting "cease fire now," attempted to block every entrance and exit into the building in order to force the politicians inside to confront them and hear their demands. Their efforts, however, ended violently as Capitol Police responded and attempted to remove them from the various entrances into the building, which resulted in only one arrest.
Police attempted to remove the protesters from their entrenched positions by pulling each member of the interlocked formation apart. However, this eventually led to various violent confrontations between officers and demonstrations. "It is shameful the way that nonviolent protesters and members of our community were met with violence tonight," protester Dani Noble, who came from Philadelphia for the demonstration, said about the police response per Newsmax. "It is absolutely shameful."
U.S. Capitol Police released a statement following the altercation explaining that six of their officers received injuries, including minor cuts, being pepper sprayed, and being punched. Despite this, only one protester was arrested, with USCP noting, "24-year old Ruben Arthur Camacho of Woodbridge, NY, was arrested for Assault on a Police Officer after an officer witnessed Camacho slam another officer into a garage door and then punch the female officer in the face."
In response to the violent demonstration at the DNC, various commentators slammed the demonstrators for the violence. "The nation's capital is under siege. Last week, it was the White House. This week, it's the DNC," Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) wrote on X/Twitter. "These left-wing lunatics have to be held accountable."
"Last night, pro-Hamas protesters outside the U.S. Capitol violently attacked the Democratic National Committee headquarters. I condemn this criminal activity, which injured six brave Capitol Police officers in the strongest terms. As Americans, we must unite with one voice in steadfast support of our ally Israel," wrote Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA). "I want to thank the officers with the U.S. Capitol Police who worked quickly to evacuate members, staff, and civilians and arrest those engaged in violence. Congress will not be intimidated by this vile display of anti-Semitism."
