'The People Deserve The Truth': Gov. Ron DeSantis Directs State Officials To Open Investigation Into Second Trump Assassination Attempt

Following the second attempted assassination of 45th President Donald Trump on Sunday at the Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) announced that he had instructed state officials to conduct their own investigation into the incident, explaining that the American people deserve the truth about what occurred.

"The State of Florida will be conducting its own investigation regarding the attempted assassination at Trump International Golf Club," Gov. DeSantis announced on X. "The people deserve the truth about the would-be assassin and how he was able to get within 500 yards of the former president and current GOP nominee."

During a round of golf on Sunday, President Trump was tackled by the Secret Service on the fifth hole after Routh was able to get within a few hundred yards of President Trump's location with an AK-14 rifle, a GoPro camera, and two backpacks. The would-be assassin, who reportedly had been camping out at the golf course for 12 hours, was confronted by the Secret Service when one of the agents who was scouting the golf course saw the barrel of the weapon pointing out of a chain-link fence. Routh fled the scene after agents opened fire about 300 to 500 yards away from Trump. The former president, who was not harmed, was rushed from the scene by his protective detail when the shots rang out.

Authorities were able to apprehend Routh about 20 minutes later on I-95 after a witness photographed Routh's black Nissan license plate as he fled from the scene. According to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, the witness who saw Routh escape from the bushes later identified him.

In response to the second attempted assassination in the last 64 days, Trump blamed President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris' rhetoric that likely incited the targeting. "He believed the rhetoric of Biden and Harris, and he acted on it," Trump explained to Fox News. "Their rhetoric is causing me to be shot at when I am the one who is going to save the country, and they are the ones that are destroying the country — both from the inside and out."

President Trump then pointed to recent comments by the alleged "unity" candidates that cast him as a "threat" to the American system of government. "They are the opposite [of unity]. These are people that want to destroy our country," Trump stated. "It is called the enemy from within. They are the real threat."

"They do it with a combination of rhetoric and lawsuits they wrap me up in," Trump said. "These are the things that dangerous fools, like the shooter, listen to — that is the rhetoric they listen to, and the same with the first one." Trump survived the first assassination attempt against him on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania, with only a minor wound to his right ear.
