In a massive level of hypocrisy that surprises absolutely nobody, ‘The Squad,’ which is in favor of defunding the police, has spent over $1.2 million of their campaign funds on private security since they ascended to office.
The New York Post reported on the records, which show that Cori Bush (D-MO) has somehow managed an insane $730,000 on private security since her running for Congress in 2019, averaging $146,000+ a year on security alone, nearly triple what the average American earns.
Bush also gave $75,000 to her now-husband Cortney Merrits, who she had been dating at the time of being hired. The Democrat’s blatantly corrupt move did not go unnoticed, being hit with a Federal Election Commission complaint in March when the information that Merrits didn’t even have the proper license to provide security was discovered.
The Missouri congresswoman made the argument to CBS in a 2021 interview that even though she pushes to defend the police, she needs her own private security because she has had death threats made against her.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) follows behind, spending over $272,000, much of which includes upgrading the security at her district offices in New York. Some of the spending includes $20,000 on “internet” and “digital” security, with other trace amounts going towards different security measures.
Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) was the third highest spending member of the squad, putting out over $125,000 since she ascended to office in 2019 for different security measures.
One of the largest benefactors of the security funds has been Peace Security, a private security firm based in St. Louis that is openly pro-Second Amendment. The firm has been paid $380,947 by members of ‘The Squad,’ meaning that a significant amount of anti-Second Amendment voters' money has been pocketed by a group that strongly supports the right to bear arms.
Of course, the spending of members of Congress on security in itself has nothing wrong with it. These people are elected officials who very well could be targeted for their political views and positions of power. The problem instead arises that these people are actively pushing to defund the police who provide security for the average American while spending droves of money to protect themselves.
The double standards by high-ranking officials are nothing new, especially in the Democratic Party. It’s just disappointing to see them slowly become more blatant about it, failing to even attempt to hide the idea that they believe they are more valuable than the average person.
