'There Are No More Excuses': Marjorie Taylor Greene Threatens To Oust Speaker Mike Johnson Ahead Of Ukraine Funding Vote

On Tuesday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene took a significant step by sending a detailed letter to her Republican colleagues, explaining her decision to initiate the process to remove Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) last month. Greene's motion to vacate was a direct response to Johnson's support for a bipartisan minibus spending package, a move that she believed was a breach of trust and a failure to uphold his promises.

In her letter to fellow Republicans, Greene argued that Speaker Johnson "has unfortunately not lived up to a single one of his self-imposed tenets" that he promised when he was elected to the speakership five months ago. Included in those promises was to only advance bills that have a majority Republican support, providing transparency throughout the lawmaking process, growing the Republican majority, and various other assurances.

Greene cited various instances in which Johnson has allegedly worked "behind closed doors" with Democrats as justification for her action, adding that the expulsion of George Santos shrunk the GOP majority rather than growing it. The Georgia Republican also railed against Johnson's decision to bring the foreign aid package to the House floor for a vote this week. "Now, as we come back into session, we will be voting on funding Ukraine with another $60 billion dollars. The last time we voted on Ukraine funding was September 28, 2023, and the majority of Republicans voted against giving Ukraine $300 million by 117-101 votes. Mike Johnson was one of the NO votes," she explained.

"What is the future of our party and our country if Republicans continue to lay down and do nothing to stop the Democrats? No, the answer is not next time, or next appropriations, or next Congress. There are no more excuses," Greene wrote. "And if these actions by the leader of our conference continue, then we are not a Republican party—we are a Uniparty that is hell-bent on remaining on the path of self-inflicted destruction. I will neither support nor take part in any of that, and neither will the people we represent."

If Greene decides to go through with her motion to vacate the chair this week, the House of Representatives would once again struggle to find a leader. Still, some moderate Democrats have said that they would be willing to support Johnson's speakership if it came down to ensuring a functioning lower chamber or waiting for weeks for the GOP caucus to decide on a new speaker.
