Trump Promises To Make Tough-On-Crime Agenda A 'Top Priority' In Second Term After Dozens Shot In Chicago Over Weekend

On Monday, President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to emphasize his support for tough-on-crime policies that would make cities like Chicago, where the Democratic National Convention takes place this week, safer for residents. Trump's comments come after at least 30 people were shot in the Windy City over the weekend.

"CRIME IN AMERICA IS OUT OF CONTROL. I AM GOING TO MAKE IT, ALONG WITH THE ECONOMY, INFLATION, STRONG BORDERS, AND ENERGY DOMINANCE, MY TOP PRIORITY," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "THE DEMOCRATS ARE HOLDING THEIR CONVENTION IN CHICAGO IN ORDER TO SHOWCASE IT, AND YET 117 PEOPLE WERE SHOT, 17 KILLED, ON THE FOURTH OF JULY WEEKEND, AND 40 WERE SHOT THIS WEEKEND. THAT IS A WAR ZONE, AND WILL BE HANDLED ACCORDINGLY. I WILL BRING CRIME IN AMERICA DOWN TO A TINY FRACTION OF WHAT IT IS TODAY. MOTHERS WILL NO LONGER BE LOSING THEIR CHILDREN BECAUSE WEAK, LIBERAL POLITICIANS HAVE GIVEN UP ON SECURING A CRIME FREE USA!!! I WILL STOP VIOLENT CRIME IN AMERICA!!!"

According to ABC7 News, at least 30 people were shot over the weekend in Chicago, leading to five fatalities. One of the shootings involved two police officers taking down a suspect on Sunday after officers heard gunfire at around 1:16 AM in the Pilsen neighborhood. Upon arriving on the scene, officers encountered multiple armed individuals and opened fire on one of the armed men, leading to him being struck and succumbing to his injuries.

Another two individuals, a woman and a man, were shot by a suspect while in their vehicle on Sunday. Police arrived on the scene and transported the two victims to a local hospital, where they are recovering from their injuries.

At around the same time, a 21-year-old man was shot in the shoulder, cheek, and head by a gunman after the young man crashed into a black truck on the West Side of Chicago. The driver of the black vehicle then got out and opened fire on the 21-year-old, leaving him in critical condition and proceeding to flee the scene before authorities could respond.

On Saturday, a 28-year-old man was shot and killed in the Bronzeville neighborhood around noon. The man was reportedly going for a walk on the sidewalk when an individual approached him and opened fire. The 28-year-old suffered multiple gunshot wounds and succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to University of Chicago Hospital. The shooter has yet to be taken into custody.

As evidenced by just the handful of brutal shootings that happened over the weekend in Chicago, the city has a crime epidemic that plagues the city's communities. Under President Trump's first term, tough-on-crime policies were standard, and his promise to return those policies in a second term should be welcomed by those living in urban areas. The American people long for safe and secure neighborhoods, and the left-wing prosecutors who have allowed criminals to run free on the streets of cities like Chicago are facing the consequences of their disastrous policies in elections nationwide.
