The Investigation Is 'Outrageous And Unlawful': Trump's Legal Team Makes A Move On The Classified Documents Investigation

Trump's legal team is seeking to schedule a meeting with Biden's Attorney General Merrick Garland to discuss the status of the Department of Justice's investigation over the allegations that Trump unlawfully stored classified documents at his home in Mar-a-Lago as well as his challenging of the 2020 election.

According to Just the News, in the letter that the attorneys sent to Garland, they accused the Biden administration of conducting a "baseless...outrageous and unlawful" investigation of the 45th president and Biden's likely rival for the White House in the 2024 election.

The letter in question read, "[w]e represent Donald J. Trump, the 45th President of the United States, in the investigation currently being conducted by the Special Counsel's Office. Unlike President Biden, his son Hunter, and the Biden family, President Trump is being treated unfairly. No President of the United States has ever, in the history of the country, been baselessly investigated in such an outrageous and unlawful fashion. We request a meeting at your earliest convenience to discuss the ongoing injustice that is being perpetrated by your Special Counsel and his prosecutors."

Attorney General Garland appointed the Special Counsel, Jack Smith, to handle the investigation of Mr. Trump. The investigation over the documents issue has so far resulted in an unparalleled raid on the personal home of a former president of the United States. While Garland has been insistent that "[s]ince I became Attorney General, I have made clear that the Department of Justice will speak through its court filings and its work", there have been innumerable leaks to the press over what the investigators allegedly found.

When Biden's own classified documents scandal hit, Garland also appointed a special counsel to examine that case as well. On the surface, this would make Garland appear to be acting as an honest broker. However, given the allegations over how the Biden adminstration has politically intervened in covering up scandals from probes into sensitive subjects like the president's son and allegations that Garland is a politically minded actor, this would cut against that image of impartiality.

Garland for his part insists that he stands by the testimony he gave to Congress about special counsels being able to act autonomously in their decisions regarding the investigation itself and their decision to charge. Only a few weeks after the attorney general made this statement, a whistleblower from the IRS claimed that political decisionmaking were interfering with the Hunter Biden probe and explained that his team was removed from this probe in an apparent act of retaliation.

second whistleblower from the IRS has come forward with similar claims about political interfence in the Hunter Biden probe. Even the letter submitted by Biden's IRS commissioner, while denying his department retaliated against one of the whistleblowers, admitted that "the change in their work assignment came at the direction of the Department of Justice [i.e. Garland's department]."
