In an opinion piece by Jack Shafer published last week in Politico, Fox News host Tucker Carlson was proposed to be the best intermediary to save Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich after he was arrested by Russian authorities in March on charges of espionage.
Carlson has repeatedly been derided by the left as being a “propagandist” for Putin during the Russo-Ukrainian war because he questions the Biden administration’s policies of aiding Ukraine in the far flung war to depreciates America’s military strength.
However, for Shafer, that narrative seems to be what is driving him to call on Carlson to head to Moscow to negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Why Carlson? He has consistently questioned American involvement in the Ukraine war and is a longtime skeptic of the Russia hawks,” the opinion columnist writes. “He even went so far as to ask in late 2019, ‘Why shouldn’t I root for Russia? Which by the way, I am.'”
“Although Carlson said later in the broadcast that he was kidding, not everybody took it that way — and for good reason,” Shafer argued. “He called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ‘a dictator.’ Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has returned Carlson’s pro-Russia treatment, stroking Fox News for ‘trying to represent some alternative points of view.'”
The Politico writer then went on to explain that Tucker could go with Rupert Murdock who owns both Fox News and The Wall Street Journal.
“Murdoch could surely find time to board his private jet with Carlson and fly to Moscow to jawbone Putin,” the columnist explains. “They could make a good one-two combination — Carlson the sycophant and Murdoch the seasoned manipulator of presidents and prime ministers.”
In a recent appearance on the ‘Full Send Podcast’, Carlson explained that he had already attempted to coordinate an interview with Putin, but was stopped by the American government.
“The NSA broke into my Signal account, which I didn’t know they could do,” he said leading to the host asking, “How do you know the NSA broke into your signal?”
“Because they admitted it,” Carlson responded, explaining,” I got a call from somebody in Washington. This person said you know ‘Are you gonna come to Washington anytime soon?’ Yeah, actually I’m going to be up in a week. Meet me Sunday morning. So I go and this person’s like ‘Are you planning a trip to go see Putin?'”
“And I was like how would you know that? I haven’t told anybody. I mean anybody. Not my brother, not my wife, nobody,” the Fox host explained. “How would you know that?” Carlson asked the person he meant with to which he responded, “Because NSA pulled your texts with this other person you were texting.”

Whether or not Carlson was to attempt to forge a deal with Putin, it is unlikely that the Biden administration would allow him given its prior actions to stop him from interviewing the Russian dictator. Nevertheless, it certainly is an interesting proposal and anything could happen.
