In Vice President Kamala Harris' attempt to convince the American public that she would be tough on the border if elected president in November despite her record in the Biden-Harris administration, the vice president reportedly would support building hundreds of millions of dollars worth of border wall on the US-Mexico border. The proposal, first proposed in Congress earlier this year, is the Democratic candidate's latest flip-flop given Harris' prior commitment to never approve funding for Trump's "medieval vanity project."
According to Axios, Vice President Harris has changed her position on several issues in the weeks after becoming the Democratic nominee, including reversing her position on banning fracking, reversing her support for universal healthcare, and changing her mind on a federal gun buyback program. All of these policy reversals, however, have been made public by campaign aides rather than Harris herself. However, the attempt to change her image on the border has been a centerpiece of the campaign in advertising and in some of Harris' speeches.
In her speech to the Democratic National Convention on Thursday, Vice President Harris said she would sign the Senate border bill that failed to pass through Congress earlier this year. The legislation, negotiated by Sen. James Lankford (R-OK), Sen. Kristen Sinema (I-AZ), and Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), would spend $650 million on border wall construction, far from the $18 billion requested by President Trump in 2018. "It requires the Trump border wall," Lankford told Axios. "It is in the bill itself that it sets the standards that were set during the Trump administration: Here's where it will be built. Here's how it has to be built, the height, the type, everything during the Trump construction."
Sen. Lankford added that Harris didn't participate in the negotiations for the bill and that this is the first time he's heard Harris mention the legislation. "We never saw any vice president staff here. ... She was a Johnny-come-never," he said. "I know she's talking about it now, but she wasn't talking about it at all before."
Vice President Harris has a long history of opposing Trump's border wall, including in February 2020 when she wrote on Facebook, "Trump's border wall is a complete waste of taxpayer money and won't make us any safer." She also called the wall, after taking office in the Senate, a "stupid use of money. I will block any funding for it."
Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance (R-OH) predicted Harris' flip-flop on the border wall earlier this month, writing on X, "Kamala Harris will soon propose that we finish the border wall and Make America Great Again. No one should be fooled by the fake campaign copying President Trump's vision. The difference is: Trump actually lowered prices and as president; Harris is in power *now* and does nothing."
"Kamala Harris is a fake. If she wants to build the border wall, she could start right now!" Vance wrote after her policy reversal.
