Voters Look Back Fondly At Trump Presidency As 2024 Election Nears: POLL

Voters are much more approving of former President Donald Trump’s time in office now than they did in the fall of 2020, a new poll found.

Trump’s margins on the economy, immigration, law and order, the pandemic, unifying the country and the Supreme Court have since improved ahead of a 2024 rematch with President Joe Biden, according to a New York Times/Siena College survey of registered voters released on Saturday. The poll also showed a positive nine-point swing regarding whether respondents felt Trump left the country better off as they look back at his tenure.

The former president also holds a wide advantage over Biden when the voters were asked about how they “remember” their respective tenures, according to the survey. For instance, 42% believe Trump was “mostly good for America” compared to only 25% who said the same of Biden.

Biden received lower approval ratings than Trump on the issues of the economy, law and order, immigration, the Supreme Court and foreign conflicts, the poll found. The former president held a 30-point advantage over Biden on the economy, as well as and 18-point lead on immigration and nine-point lead on maintaining law and order.

Various other surveys have found voters reporting that they felt better off during the Trump years than under Biden’s watch. An early March version of the NYT/Siena College poll indicated only 18% of registered voters said Biden’s policies “helped [them] personally,” while 40% said the same of Trump’s.

The NYT/Siena College survey released on Saturday also found Trump’s margin over Biden for a 2024 matchup has shrunk to just one point compared to his previous five-point lead.

Trump continues to narrowly lead Biden in the RealClearPolitics national average, as well as in key swing states like ArizonaGeorgiaNevadaNorth CarolinaWisconsin and Michigan.

The NYT/Siena College poll surveyed 1,059 registered voters from April 7 to April 11 with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3%.
