On Monday, Rep. Alexandria Ocascio-Cortez (D-NY) joined President Joe Biden for an event in Virginia to celebrate Earth Day. During the news conference, however, the Squad Democrat turned away from President Biden's climate policies and instead praised the ongoing anti-Israel demonstrations taking place across America's colleges and universities.
"Today also serves as a reminder of the power of organizing, of what we can accomplish [when] young people, climate advocates, labor organizers, and working people of all backgrounds come together to demand the future. We all deserve it. It is especially important that we remember the power of young people shaping the country today," the New York Democrat said. "Of all days as we once again witness the leadership of those peaceful student-led protests on campuses like Columbia, Yale, Berkeley, and many others."
AOC's comments come after Orthodox Rabbi Elie Buechler, the co-director of Columbia's Jewish Learning Initiative, warned over 250 Jewish students in a WhatsApp message over the weekend that the campus is no longer safe amid the ongoing anti-Semitic protests. "What we are witnessing in and around campus is terrible and tragic. The events of the last few days, especially last night, have made it clear that Columbia University's Public Safety and the NYPD cannot guarantee Jewish students' safety in the face of extreme antisemitism and anarchy," the rabbi wrote. "It deeply pains me to say that I would strongly recommend you return home as soon as possible and remain home until the reality in and around campus has dramatically improved."
"It is not our job as Jews to ensure our own safety on campus. No one should have to endure this level of hatred, let alone at school," Buechler wrote, concluding, "May we see better days on campus soon."
Over the weekend, demonstrators could be heard shouting, "Al-Qassam, you make us proud! Take another soldier out! We say justice; you say how? Burn Tel Aviv to the ground! Hamas, we love you. We support your rockets, too! Red, black, green, and white, we support Hamas' fight! It is right to rebel, Al-Qassam, give them hell! It is right to rebel, Hamas give them hell! Free, free, free Palestine!" Footage from the campus also showed the protesters telling Jewish students to "go back to Poland" and calling for the students, who were called "pigs," to be killed.
Despite the blatant hatred shown on the Columbia campus, President Biden condemned the protesters but also condemned those who "don't understand what's going on with the Palestinians."
