On Friday, President Joe Biden spoke to reporters about the death of Russian opposition leader Aleksey Navalny. He took the opportunity to urge House Republicans to pass additional funding for Ukraine's ongoing fight against Russia, and Biden attacked Trump's recent remarks on NATO. However, Biden's remarks were once again overshadowed by a senior moment where he froze for nearly ten seconds attempting to come up with what he was going to say next.
"Reports of his death, if they're true, and I have no reasons to believe they're not — Russian authorities are going to tell their own story," Biden said at the outset of his remarks. "But make no mistake: Putin is responsible for Navalny's death. Putin is responsible. What has happened to Navalny is yet more proof of Putin's brutality. No one should be fooled."
Earlier in the day, the Russian Federal Prison Service announced that Navalny, Putin's fiercest critic who was serving a 19-year sentence in a Siberian prison, felt unwell after a walk and then collapsed. Despite appearing relatively healthy in a court video link the day prior, Navalny was unable to be resuscitated once an ambulance was called.
The Biden administration vowed at the time that Russia would face "devastating" consequences if he died in prison after he began his sentence in January 2021. When asked about what consequences Putin would face, Biden explained that Russia has already suffered greatly due to sanctions and hundreds of thousands of casualties during the war, and the president said that his team is "looking at a whole bunch of options" in response to Navalyn's death.
Later on, during the remarks, which lasted about ten minutes, Biden went after his presidential competitor, saying, "All of us should reject the dangerous statements made by the previous president that invited Russia to invade our NATO allies if they weren't paying up. He said if an ally did not pay their dues, he'd encourage Russia to, quote, do whatever the hell they want."
Biden then paused for about ten seconds before he said, "I guess I should clear my mind here a little bit and not say what I'm really thinking."
As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, a recent ABC News/Ipsos survey, taken from February 9-10, shows that 86 percent of Americans believe Biden is too old to serve another term in the White House, and today's freeze-up is yet more proof that he is unfit for another four years.
