During an interview on Independence Day with Philadelphia's WURD host Andrea Lawful-Sanders, President Joe Biden said that he was proud to be the first black woman to serve with a black president. The remark is the latest example of the president misspeaking as Democrats demand he withdraw from the race following a debate performance filled with similar incidents.
President Biden, who served with the first black president and the first black vice president, struggled to get out his message to black voters while proving that his debate performance last week wasn't just a "bad night" but a sign of regular behavior. "By the way, I'm proud to be, as I said, the first vice president, first black woman, to serve with a black president," he told the WURD host. The president then noted his appointment of the first black woman, Ketanji Brown Jackson, to serve on the Supreme Court. "I'm proud to have put up the first black woman to the Supreme Court. There's just so much that we can do because together there's nothing...look, this is the United States of America."
The president also stumbled in other segments of the interview, telling the host that he was proud to be the "first president that got elected statewide in the state of Delaware when I was a kid." Biden was attempting to explain that he was the first Catholic to get elected to statewide office in 1972, but his inability to get his facts straight shows the stress that his age is having on his mental state. Quizzingly, Biden attempted to connect his Catholic faith with the struggle of black Americans to be represented in government, per The New York Post. "I looked at John Kennedy and said, 'Well, he — John — he got elected. Why can't I get elected?'" he said. "People need things to look up to."
In response to reports of Biden's multiple missteps during the interview, the Biden campaign's Director of Rapid Response Ammar Moussa posted to X, "This is absurd. It was abundantly clear what the president meant. This would be considered a perfectly normal speech pattern for any other person in America and has certainly been normal for Joe Biden for his entire career. What are we even doing anymore."
While the Biden campaign can continue to claim that reporting of Biden's lapses is "absurd," the American people can see the president's deterioration with their own eyes. The president himself told Democratic governors on Wednesday that he needs to work less and not schedule events past 8 PM because of the impact that it's having on him. When asked about his health, the president said he was fine but added, "It's just my brain."
