As the 2024 race enters its final stretch, the Harris campaign is deploying Democrat heavy hitters to try to get out the vote amongst key demographics critical for Vice President Kamala Harris to win in the battleground states. Among those sent to campaign on her behalf in Georgia is former President Bill Clinton, who is attempting to encourage rural voters to support Harris. During one of his campaign stops on Monday, however, Clinton slipped up and told the assembled Georgians that Laken Riley, the 21-year-old college student killed by an illegal immigrant earlier this year, would have been alive had the Biden-Harris administration secured the border.
As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, Laken Riley was found dead on the University of Georgia's campus in late February. Authorities eventually settled on 26-year-old illegal immigrant Jose Antonio Ibarra as the main suspect, concluding that he abducted and then brutally murdered Riley while she was out for a jog on the campus. Authorities disclosed that Ibarra "seriously disfigur[ed] her body … by disfiguring her skull." Following the beating, Ibarra then dragged the young woman's body to a secluded area.
Ibarra was charged earlier this year with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, kidnapping, hindering a 911 call, and concealing the death of another, as previously reported by the DC Enquirer. Authorities in New York previously had custody of Ibarra for endangering a minor. Still, the NYPD released him onto the streets before Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) could issue a detainer.
The Trump campaign has made getting "migrant crime" under control a key pillar of the campaign after three and a half years of unchecked illegal immigration that has allowed millions of illegal immigrants to enter the United States, burden social services in America's largest cities, flood small towns nationwide, and lead to preventable crimes like the murder of Laken Riley.
President Clinton seemed to echo the Trump campaign's messaging, telling voters, "You had a case in Georgia not very long ago, didn't you? They made an ad about a young woman killed by an immigrant," Clinton said. "If they had all been properly vetted, that probably wouldn't have happened...and America is not having enough babies to keep our population up, so we need immigrants that have been vetted to do work. There wouldn't be a problem, and [Trump] couldn't keep people all torn up and upset."
In response to the clip, the Trump campaign reposted the video with the caption, "Bill Clinton says Laken Riley's death 'probably wouldn't have happened' if Kamala did her job at the border, continues on to imply that we need illegal immigrants for cheap labor. He was supposed to be campaigning FOR Kamala. YIKES."
