As President Trump continues to gain momentum ahead of the general election in November, black voters are increasingly abandoning President Joe Biden for his Republican opponent as the failures of the Biden administration make it more expensive and more dangerous to live in America. During a speech to the Black Conservative Federation in Columbia, South Carolina, on Friday night, Trump said, "And then I got indicted a second time and then a third time and a fourth time. And a lot of people said that that's why the black people like me, because they have been hurt so badly and discriminated against. And they actually viewed me as– I'm being discriminated against. It's been pretty amazing."
In response to the comment, Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) joined Kristen Welker on NBC's 'Meet The Press' to discuss whether Trump's comments were racist and why black voters are increasingly moving towards the 45th president. "Congressman, it sounds like Donald Trump was implying that he can win black voters because they get indicted all the time, too. Is that what he was saying?" Welker asked.
"I think that's part of it. When you layer on the fact that, yes, this is political persecution from the Department of Justice and from radical DAs throughout our country, this is something similar that black people have to deal with, with the justice system themselves," Donalds responded, as reported by Breitbart. "So there is the look of it; it is really simple. Well, dang, if the government is going after him with foolishness, he can't be that bad, especially considering the fact that Joe Biden is terrible at his job."
A New York Times/Sienna College poll released in November found that 22 percent of black voters across six battleground states would support Trump in a general election matchup against Biden. While 22 percent may not seem like a lot, Biden won 92 percent of the black vote in 2020, according to Pew Research. Such a drastic shift could spell disaster for the Biden campaign.
According to The Cook Political Report's 2020 Demographic Swingometer, if Trump had secured 22 percent of the black vote in 2020, he would have handily won the election. With all other demographics staying the same, a swing of 14 points in Trump's direction from African Americans would have won Georgia, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. If Democrats lose even some support from black voters, they are in for a rude awakening come November.
